He looks very angry that all his wing-flapping doesn't seem to be getting him off the ground. :P

Don't worry Krabo, I've just gone and seen for myself that you had bigger things to celebrate.

Yes! It's so happy and adorable! I wish it was part of our forum's palette of smilies...

Here's a small chorus line of running smilies, to celebrate my n+1th post.

Hmm. n+1th would be spelled out as "n plus oneth". Is it just me, or does that look weird to others, too?

It does look weird, and probably should look weird to everyone, but it's mostly correct and considered proper notation, because you wouldn't say the "th" until after you've completed the math. So I guess it's really the (n+1)th post.

So before, I had 2,553 posts, so (n+1)th is (2,553+1)th, which is my 2,554th post. See? :D

Sure.

Hey, now that you are here, how would you spell out x^0, is it something like "x to the zeroth power" or what is it?

In the US, I think we would say "X to the zero-eth" power, yes. I think I've actually heard that in math class before, and all just because of a lack of a better term that we consider culturally our own.

In the UK and other Commonwealth countries, my guess is that they say "X to the naught" or something like that... perhaps Mooms can advise?

Thank you.

Another question: Can you ask something like "How many-eth is it?" when you want to know the current position or rank of an object among other objects?

Morning all.

Actually Theta, Krabo's guess was spot on. In the UK we would say x to the zeroth power informally (sort of as a joke, as it is not a real word) but probably if we wanted to be correct we would say x to the power of zero.

Krabo, no, you wouldn't say that. You would ask 'what position is it in', or, if you already know that you are referring to a ranking system, you could say 'where is it', or 'what place is it in'.

Strange that English language should lack this feature.

English also lacks a plural for "you".
This bugs me to no end. "yous?'

I say "yous" all the time. Americans say "y'all", too. What would they say in the UK?

I'd also like English to settle on a gender-neutral third-person pronoun, so we don't have to keep saying "he or she" every time. Maybe "they"? That's what I use, but so many people object to it because it's usually a plural word.
