Actually, thinking about it, the first picture doesn't look like a horseshoe, it looks like a horse hoof.

In fact, weird is a weird word. To my eyes it looks wrong. It would be more natural to spell it wierd.

It is one of those words I have to look at twice to make sure about. Of course, if you have learnt any Germanic languages then wierd does look more correct, even though it's not.
