Why is the moon drifting away from the earth at an average rate of 3.8 cm (1.5 in) per year?

Do you think it could be because it is getting tired of being so close to the madness on Earth? Wouldn't that make me drift away?

It would be considered constant, but if you factor in the gravitational forces growing weaker with distance over time it will slowly move away faster and faster. not that it would mater much in our life times. but in one million years time its moved away about 125000 feet

Am I wrong in saying that his effect is due to tides slowing earth's spin and so transferring earths rotational energy to moons gravitational one?

Isn't there now something that doesn't fit the big picture? How can the rotational energy of body A be transferred to the potential energy of body B unless the bodies are connected by a rigid rod?

Doesn't it take aeons for two bodies' rotational periods to lock mutually as has been the case with the Earth and the Moon? Isn't such a situation only possible because the Earth and the Moon are not perfect, smooth spheres?

Now why did I take part in this discussion?

I cannot claim the credit, I found it on the Internet. Glad to make you laugh though. 8)

Skilpadde certainly has the required serendipity to find funny cat pics. I enjoy her choices.

Why has the Yellowstone Caldera just of late had a fairly large earth quake? its not getting ready to burp is it? I am sure its harmless.....................

Could it be a symptom of us reaching the end of the alley, brick wall and all?

Can I just say that 1) because this is happens from tidal dissipation the rate of moon drifting away is probably also affected by their composition which is due to earth's volcanic processes and continental plates (idk if thats the word) moving around
2) first order effects probably are not that important and I dont think (1) in the long time scale is one

Im not so sure about the details, I had to calculate some stuff years ago.. So I think moon causes tides in earth and so this water moving around causes friction with the earth and so slows its spin down, that's your mechanical effect. I don't think that being not perfect spheres matters. So angular momentum is conserved and so you boost moons angular momentum by raising its orbit.

Thinking about tidal locking, now moon's rotational period is the same as orbital (am I right?) (but thats thanks to earth affecting the moon), but we also can have moons orbital period equaling earth's rotational period (thanks to moon causing the tides). Presumably in that case there would be a lock in and moon would not drift away no more.

If I said something stupid can you correct me, please? :P

How about Krabo, AspergianMutantt and cannotthinkoff stay here and discuss technical scientific stuff, and Sylkat and I go off into the corner and discuss bunnies and pancakes? :P

Would anyone care to discuss the quantum entanglement of bunnies and pancakes?

Would anyone care that these are non-quantum systems and so such discussion would be meaningless?
