Every autumn we get loads of mushrooms growing near us. I love going out and picking them (free yummy food!) but I was pretty nervous the first couple of years, until I got used to the idea that mushrooms didn't have to come from supermarkets. Haven't poisoned myself yet. 8)

They never mention anything about poisonous mushrooms in Australia. Are there any? We have one that kills you if you look at it.

Can you show us a picture?

Amanita virosa, I don't know what its English name is. Locally called valkoinen kärpässieni, free translation of which is the White Fly Mushroom. One bite and you drop dead (honest).

Amanita virosa, commonly known as the European destroying angel....

Looks frighteningly like an edible mushroom. Remind me never to go mushroom picking in Finland.

Yes, it does look like an edible mushroom. People tend to know it, but it claims several dogs yearly.

I suppose the dogs don't know any better. It does make mushroom picking hazardous though.

Which makes me think of fugu.

The sheer looks of fugu always makes me wonder why people want to risk their lives by eating it. :eew:

What, you don't think he looks all yummy?

Actually, I don't think any food is worth the risk of dying for.

Certain parts are poisonous. Specially trained chefs prepare it, so it is generally safe to eat. There are accidents though. 8O
