It's entirely possible that your image exceeds the maximum upload file size of 2048KB, so you could filter searches on Google for the image you want to use as an avatar, that will depict images of a particular size; thus making sure that the dimensions are within a certain amount of pixels.

Conversely, another possibility is that it could be a glitch that is occurring on the forum.
