Finns are never joking. We lack the necessary genes.

I would like to continue.

I'm so terribly isolated in my private world that when I spend a couple of days in these WP forums and elsewhere in the English internet, and then finally go out and see that there are other people, and when one of them says something to me in Finnish, I really have to concentrate on their words to understand what it is they are trying to say.

This is the curse of knowing several languages. I am fluent in Finnish, Swedish, German (my ancestors' Sprache), obviously English (albeit my grammar is strange at times), Russian, biblical Greek and believe it or not, biblical Hebrew.

It is like I was meant to be a priest. But my personality is that of a scribe in the 1200s who diligently copies old manuscripts for future generations to read.

I guess someone really wants to lose today.

Anyhow what do you do for a living?

Also if you are aware of this problem and you want to sort it out you may want to avoid spending several days on the English internet.
Take a break to do some quick shopping/whatever once a day or so. It should be somewhat helpfull while giving you plenty of time to isolate yourself still.

I know what you mean. Even with my limited Italian, if I have been reading or speaking it for a while, I have to stop and change gear in my brain when someone starts speaking English to me.

I am incredibly jealous of your fluency. I wish I could concentrate long enough to improve my languages to even a conversational level. I am seriously impressed at how many languages you can speak. 8)

Edit- @Spongy : Shopping? I will do anything to avoid shopping. Sometimes I pretend I don't understand English just to avoid conversations at the checkout. :P

Not true. My Finnish penpal has made a couple of jokes. Very, very dry humour, but there nonetheless. :)

Hrmm.. Well, this might seem a bit random, but perhaps this here image might suffice to get the thread going again?

I'm still not quite clear on what it's supposed to mean.

haruhi is very obsessive and likea patterba/ following plans but she is also impulsive and not too serious.

yuri is more shy/ serious and focuses on facts rather than impulses.

haruhi would have never been able to give a 4 page long explanation about what was going on. yuro did that like kyon had asked her what was the weather like

Hey Spongy,

I don't know what threads everyone is in recently. Murihiku seems to spend more time in Random ( come back to us Murihiku), I haven't seen babybird or iwannablue as much, and even Krabo and enviro haven't been around we much as usual. Canaspie has dropped off the face of the earth again too. Thank goodness Sylkat is still around. :)

I've been spending a bit less time here too in the last couple of weeks, but I've got some stuff going on IRL.

Hi moonin'

Spongy approved stores have a self checkout line where you are the one that is passing the items through the barcodes and whatnot.
Pretty great if you forget the amount of cashier jobs that this things are taking away.

You only have to interact with people that are a bit lost on how to use then now and then and you get to pretend to be lost too if you are just tired.

Glad to hear that you are managing some stuff offline too. As great as this site is it is not good to spend all our time here.

Anyhow I am off to bed.

I will let you lose as I sleep.

I'm back.

I'll take over the losing responsibilities for now.

(As an aside, I also appreciate the self-checkout machines at the supermarket. It annoys me that my local big supermarket doesn't have them. The same company has them at other locations in the city. Why not the one near my house? )

Hey Murihiku, nice to see you back. :D

I live in a provincial town. We only got the self-checkouts about six months ago. I'm torn. I hate speaking to people at the checkout, but I also hate doing new things. I keep thinking if I only have a few things at the supermarket, I could try out the self-checkout. It just seems to traumatic to try it the first time with a trolley load of groceries. It's a dilemma.

Yeah, I felt like a right dork trying them out for the first time. I watched other people use them while I was standing in line, and I eventually got the hang of them. Still though, once you get used to them it saves you from having to make small talk with people at the checkout line. Mind you, I only use self-service machines for smaller grocery loads; I still prefer the main checkout lines for full trolley loads.

I live 20 minutes from the nearest town, so unfortunately I only ever go in and do my full load of shopping.

I said to Spongy before, quite often I just pretend not to speak English.
I am usually wearing my dark glasses anyway. It helps to take the edge off all the visual input at the supermarket.

Do you actually manage to get away with not speaking English?

Wouldn't your accent give it away?

You'd be surprised, you just put on a blank look, pretend you don't understand a word, smile, nod and shrug. No speaking necessary, so no accent to give me away. I've got it down to a fine art. 8)
