Feeling sinful is sin in itself. Catholic sin, not Protestant.

I come from a family of Catholics. They are quite happy to sin all week, as they know they get forgiveness on a Sunday. Me, I am without religion.

I'm not going to say that being without religion is sin. It would not make sense.

Indeed Moomingirl, did you know that Tove Jansson (author of the Moomins) was born exactly 100 years ago? Her 100th anniversary was celebrated yesterday.

Edit: Oops. It will be the day after tomorrow (Aug 9).

I try to be a good person. I think that's more than many religious people.

And 8O just saw above

Hi Canaspie!! ! :D

Edit - No, I did not know that. I shall have to read one of her books in celebration. I am thinking of treating myself to Muumi ja punainen pyrstötähti (in Finnish) for my birthday. :)

Hi Canaspie. Been digging our gold again?

Moomingirl -- did you know that Tove Jansson was one of the Nordic trailblazers of feminism in the world?

Feminism? No. Please elaborate.

Also, on the subject of gold, I was in the supermarket a month or two ago, and I saw some Yukon Gold. The people around me may have suspected I was quite insane, as I burst out laughing when I finally got your joke only six months late.

Well, my English is not good enough to do justice to Tove Jansson in this respect. You should dig the Internet. One thing is for sure, Tove was openly lesbian which was not so common in her era.

I responded to this, but it seems to have disappeared. Maybe I hit the wrong button?

I has heard she was a lesbian. I suspect that's why her books were full of such interesting, diverse characters. It was the only way she could express it in those days.

And your English is perfect. I only hope my Finnish is half as good one day.

My English or my Finnish are not good enough to do justice to great persons in any trade of life.

Now, I may have made a grammatical mistace in adopting "trade of life" as an English idiom. I don't know if it exists. But it sounded right. Now I am confused; my 1200 pages thick Finnish-English or the 1500 pages thick English-Finnish dictionaries are not of any help. They give me no clue.

I truly suggest Moomingirl starts a thread called "What you always wanted to ask about English (etc.)" -- I promise it will not be a dead thread.

I promise.

I suspect many people would not be interested in a thread.

'Trade of life' is not an idiom as such, but it certainly doesn't sound wrong. However, I suspect...."persons from any walk of life" is the expression you were searching for.

You know of course that you are always welcome to send such queries to me by PM.

And if everyone could bear with us for just one more moment while we talk languages, please. Krabo, could you recommend a decent bilingual dictionary? The only one I have seen here has the reviews 'almost worth it for comedy value, but actually more use in Finland if you burn it to keep warm'. I therefore suspect I shall have to order one, so if yours is good and you can recommend it, I would appreciate the details. Kiitos. :)

Hi Moomingirl!! !!

A conversation about languages? Nothing for me to add, so I'll just go sell some of my Finnish gold while I wait for you two to finish.

Due to the fact that that was 12 hours ago, and Krabo will be tucked up in bed right now, it's safe to assume the conversation is finished and you can change the subject. :P

Suomi-Englanti suursanakirja. It is the ultimate work of reference. Published by WSOY, Finland.

^thanks Krabo. :)

I shall look that one up and see if I can get it sent here. I'm making do with an online dictionary at the moment, but I'm an old fashioned girl, I like to actually have a real one to refer to.

There's an excellent book shop in London, Waterstones. They have it.
