A meme, in it's original definition, is to information, what a gene is to biology. In other words, it is a single, quantifiable unit of information that can be manipulated in the same way a gene can in the animal world.

In current definitions, it also means a distinctive phrase, and often a picture accompanying a phrase, sometimes coming from a TV show, film or video game. They undergo various permutations. These sorts of memes actually should be called memetic viruses.
