(Here's the big scene I was trying to talk about. I'm not really sure what I was trying to achieve with this, but...)
"Guess what I got you for your birthday, sweetheart?" She reached under the table and handed them a little rectangular package, which was covered in brown wrapping paper.
Wait, what? "Uh... thanks, Mom." Lychee blinked. She had already given them all their presents, so they weren't sure why she was giving them something now. It might've been pretty special if she decided to give it to them at the party... or maybe it was just something nice she'd gotten at the last minute.
They grinned as they accepted it from her. "Wow, I.. really didn't expect this."
Lychee picked up the rectangular object and tore away at the paper wrapping. As they tore at the paper, surprisingly... it looked like a... book? They turned it over. It didn't have a cover. They flipped through the pages with their thumb. All the pages were blank. A... diary?
"I got you a journal!" Lychee's mom said. "You're always reading all those fanfiction things, so I thought, why not try your hand at writing?" she grinned. "I'm not sure what you would write, but I thought you could use it to write down your thoughts on your Pokemon journey!"
"Oh." Lychee looked down at the leather-bound notebook. They felt the leather with their fingers. It felt nice, she'd probably spent a lot of money on it.
"Uh.... thanks." they said. "That's cool." This would probably be going in the back of their closet, where it would be collecting dust for the rest of eternity. Or used as a doodle pad. But still, it was a nice gift.
Lychee went over and embraced their mom in a big hug, wrapping their arms around each other, smushing into one person. Lychee's mom was patting their back and... was she crying?
"Thanks, mom, I might have to use this when we get home." they smiled reassuringly.
Lychee closed their eyes contentedly, but opened them as they felt something... wet drip onto their shoulder? Lychee looked up with concern. "Wait, Mom... are you crying?"
"I... I just can't believe it," Lychee's mom sobbed. "My little Lychee is all grown up, I can't believe you're seventeen years old."
"Y-yeah, Mom, it's--"
Their mom cradled them. "I... I'm so glad you decided to start your Pokemon journey again. It's been a couple of years since you ended your first one, and you just... haven't talked to me since. You... you just haven't left the house since your last journey. It makes me worry sometimes."
Oh. Uh, wow. That was.. intense. Unintentionally, their own voice was wavering. "W-wow. Mom, you... worry about me?"
Oh. They thought they were... alone.
"Of course I do, sweetheart!" their mom emphasized. Her expression was pained. She wrapped her arms around Lychee. "I... I was worried you'd never talk to me again."
"I...."
"But that's good, Lychee." she murmured. "That means you're taking steps. You're becoming more independent."
She kissed Lychee on the forehead. "Keep taking steps for me. Make me proud."
Lychee was tearing up. "Mom..."
