Cadmium is too. It's also really toxic and used in some rechargeable batteries.

(btw, does anyone know how to safely dispose of NiCd batteries? I have two big dead NiCd camcorder batteries I need to get rid of, but in an environmentally-friendly manner.)

Don't put your toxic batteries in a landfill, as it is dangerous for otters and other critters.

try this http://www.epa.gov/Compliance/resources ... attery.pdf for some background info...contact your local city recycling center for rules on disposing of hazardous items.

For most commuinties it is illegal to dispose of any batteries by just throwing them in the garbage, including alkaline ones.

I thank those of you who've helped me with the battery issue. As soon as I get replacement batteries for the camcorder, I'll dispose of the bad ones in a responsible manner.

Just use the best batteries you can find. Duracell are quite good.
