It was armed with various torpedos and 4 Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles, which could be fired from the top of the ship when it emerged to sea-level. At the end of the eighties the JULIETT-class submarines were generally used as reserves and finally taken out of service. Since 1998 the U461 can be seen in the harbour of Peenemünde.
