Wolf-Rayet stars are highly unusual; they are very massive (the first one discovered masses about 40 times as much as the Sun), highly energetic, and repeatedly blow off their outermost gas layer, leaving them at the center of a series of concentric bubbles of gas and particles. The Wolf-Rayet star closest to Earth is the binary star Gamma Velorum A, in the constellation Vela, some 800 lightyears away. Interestingly, the pair is labeled "A" in that designation because Gamma Velorum appears to be a multiple-star system, with a total of six stars involved; the two in Gamma Velorum A orbit each other, as well as gravitationally interacting with the other four.

On a side note, "Velorum" is also the name of an extremely rare and valuable metal in the Dreamcast video game, Skies of Arcadia (as well as its GameCube remake, Skies of Arcadia Legends). Two pieces of the metal can potentially be retrieved during the Deep Sky mission, while finding Fina's crashed ship; if you find them, and if you have hired the master swordsman from Yafutoma, he will be able to use the pieces of Velorum to forge the Vorik Sword, one of the most powerful weapons in the game.
