You know, in the good old days when chewing gum was a no-no in the Soviet Union, people chewed sunflower seeds.

So in other words, my Jr. High school was full of Commie infiltrators.

Sounds healthy, anyway.

The sunflower seeds, not the commie infiltration. That's a whole 'nother discussion.

I figured, and yes, sunflower seeds were quite the fashion for some reason there. I think they were actually more popular than gum. The shells were everywhere.

Which wouldn't have been so bad, except the gum didn't completely go away, so sometimes the sidewalk would be littered with gum patches with sunflower seed shells stuck in them.

The Commie comment comes in jest of course; I am liable to joke regarding just about anything. I would say it's very difficult to figure out my actual position on things from my sense of humor most of the time (unless you think otherwise!)

But I will say it's a relevant discussion right now; I'm having to think through it with some seriousness; which, after the fall of the Soviet Union, was not something I was expecting to be doing half way around the world.

I remember a fashion at my school when some people started eating doggy kibble.

Well, I shouldn't talk; once when I was three I ate our cat's dry catfood. And I liked it!

I actually remember how it tasted. I think I would still like it.

But that shouldn't be too shameful. I mean they have to make the cats want to eat it; it can't be terrible, right?

Usually they add fat, salt and flavour enhancers. So of course it tastes ok.

Oh.

That's awful, that makes it just as bad as our human food. Poor kitties!

Do you think they did that back in 1986?

^ the cats seem to be ok with it. I have no idea if they did that in the 80?s - they probably put worse stuff in!

I had not picked up on Krabo using 'full stop' instead of 'period'. He must be getting a decent English influence somewhere.


And how did I miss Theta's (no doubt accidental) double entendre? I'm usually the first one to spot those.

I haven't been on the Random forum much lately, but I've still being going different places around the site.
On another topic, I just started using Memrise yesterday. Plus I read an NZ Herald article a week ago that recommended Duolingo. Why did I not hear about these sites sooner?

But yeah, I like coming to this part of the site regularly. It's a nice break from everything else IRL, with people who are (relatively) similar to me.
