Glad I came across this lovely tribute to Moomin thread at last. Yeah she's super special and deserves a thread of her very own.

She'll be teaching the islanders how to pole dance while there, and maybe they will teach her some of their strange customs that she can take back to NZ. The more tasteful ones, that is... not the raw whelk-swallowing contests or the walking on coals...

Thank you CampinCat, that is very sweet. And wow, you have overtaken me on posts. :D

Riikka, I don't think anyone knows what is going on here.

enviro, you don't know me very well yet if you think I am going to be spending that much time interacting with the islanders. I plan to find a small patch of shade somewhere with my pina colada and a book, and watch the world go by, without having to actually interact with it. 8)

Now, which island are you visiting again? Have you ever been there before?

Never thought about it before, but Commonwealth Oceanians must go to South Pacific islands a lot for vacation. And that is awesome. :D

I was being a bit tongue in cheek regarding island customs. Just imagining you participating in unusual activities like coconut throwing and coal walking.

You may not wish to interact with the islanders but would surely interact with the Finns when you get there eventually?

Mind you, Finns seem to be a taciturn lot, unlike the voluble Italians, so we would mostly fit right in there...

Well Theta, we're a long way from anywhere here. If you want a cheap and reasonably close holiday your choices are the pacific islands, or Australia. I have been to one of the islands before, but not this one.

I'm not going to reveal which one I'm going to yet. You know how it is - hordes of screaming fans will turn up at the airport if they know which flight I am going to be on.

Enviro, trying to interact with Finns is like trying to get blood out of a (very much liked) stone sometimes. :P But yes, I would like to interact with them. I already have a lunchdate planned with Riikka. 8)

As you say, they have a reputation for being taciturn. I can't help but think that would help, but then I guess the resident Finns would have to tell us that. It must be easier though, nit being expected to be social and hold conversations all the time, as is expected in some other countries. I dream one day of hiding out in a Finnish cottage for six months, speaking enough just to learn the language, but otherwise doing a whole lot of nothing. 8)

Mönkiä.

This Finnish verb covers it all.

It can be said of cats: "kissa mönkii." It means that the cat is mönkiiing somewhere she shouldn't. Like a dark compartment, wardrobe etc.

Sounds sort of like a monk hiding away in a dark cell to meditate in solitude...

What happens at a Finnish party? Does everyone remain in their own apartment and drink / eat and communicate through Skype? 8O

Wait, but wouldn't it just be a giant Skype chat, then?

I hate to say, but you are close. -- Now that I have been thinking for an hour of a witty answer, all I can say is I agree.

Hate to say it but there are those replies of mine I wish never had been published.

Meh.

Actually, I didn't think a Finnish party would be as social as being on Skype. Then you have to talk and look at each other. I thought it would be rather more like our little parties here. We all chat when we feel like it, no eye contact needed, and if you just feel like wandering in, looking around and then leaving again, that's ok too.
