Okay----let's try, THIS.....

Here's the situation: Each person will post a Homonym, Acronym, or Synonym (hence, my title). We're gonna go from A to Z ("Q", "X", "Y", and "Z" may be skipped). You have to post every word, involved (or, at least, every word you can think-of); unless, of course, you have a word like "sow"----then, you have to put: "verb and noun". The posts do NOT have to be in "HAS" order----just make your LEADING word "in-line" (alphabetical), with the previous person's LEADING word.

If you don't feel like being "boxed-in", today, you may post a different class of words (e.g. you may post an Eponym----this is the ONLY time, another language is allowed; AND, the ENGLISH word MUST be the one that follows, in-line----meaning, FIRST, in your post [I'm looking forward to learning from our resident Latin Professor, "DeepHour"!]), and please don't forget to post the CLASS of the word (if it's other than HAS)----in the example, above, you would put: "eponym".

Now, if you're like me, I had to scratch my head, to remember which words, were which----so, here's a refresher, for whomever needs it:

Homonym - a word that is spelled or pronounced in the same way as one or more other words but has a different meaning. Examples include the noun and adjective "plane" and "plain", pronounced the same but spelled differently; and, the verb and noun "sow", spelled the same but pronounced differently.

Acronym - word formed from the initials or other parts of several words, e.g. "NATO", from the initial letters of "North Atlantic Treaty Organization".

With the blessing (I hope!) of Campin Cat, I've been doing a bit of research, and it seems that what we've been describing as HOMONYMS (eg. Peace/Peace, Oar/Ore) are in fact HOMOPHONES (words which sound the same, but are spelled differently).

Then there are HOMOGRAPHS (also known as HETERONYMS), words which are spelled alike but pronounced differently, and have completely different meanings, eg 'bow' (and arrow) and 'bow' (down).

HOMONYMS: words which have the same spelling and pronunciation, but with different meanings, eg 'Race' (=competitive event), and 'Race' (=ethnic identity).

Hope this helps.
:D :?

We could add in a little math, too... All homonyms are homographs, but not all homographs are homonyms.

So crazy. All of a sudden, my brain is going bonkers and I can't keep track of what's what. Maybe it's just tired from being used all day, for work. Ugh. I am loving this game, though.

LOL It's quite challenging to ME, as well! It may not last long, because of all of us frying our brains!! LOL What has helped ME, is that I copied and pasted all the "classes of words" definitions----DeepHour's, as well----and put them in a word processor document, and saved it----then, I can just keep referring to THAT.

I'm glad you like it!!

Uh, yeah----NO!! LOL I think we've got quite ENOUGH, to be getting on with!

Wear / Ware (Homophone)

(As with ALL "A-Z" threads, "X", "Y", and "Z" may be skipped----and, in THIS thread, "Q".)
