I used to be able to read and write a certain amount of Russian Cyrillic and ancient Sanskrit, but that was a long time ago.

We were thought Cyrillic right up to the fall of communism. You're lucky that French has (at least) lost it's declension system, we have 7 cases. 
Foreigners usually don't get it completely right unless their native tongue also has a declension system.

(When I started learning French my brain kept mixing up Russian words with French words which left French people even more baffled what I was saying to them. The French seems to have pushed most of the Russian out of my mind now though

)Well there are many "Teach Yourself Russian" (or any other language) sites on the Internet, not sure how effective they are though. Also most of the Wiki articles enable to read in multiple languages, perhaps that might help??
French is pretty much overrated anyway.
