Robert Redford as Kurtz?

There must be another Robert Redford, and no one told me!

That idea is as bad as Sinatra wanting to portray a heavyweight boxer.

I can see it. It would have more closely fit the original interpretation of Kurtz. He was supposed to be significantly younger and thinner than Brando, and having him played by a young and charming actor like Redford would have made his downfall seem all the more shocking. Still, I'm glad Brando stuck around.

Redford as Kurtz is far easier for me to accept than Redford as Michael Corleone in The Godfather. That's who the studio wanted, but Coppola fought for Al Pacino and won.

How could anyone have envisioned Robert Redford as a 100% Italian, brooding, Mafia prince?

It probably would have been a terrific performance, but yes, also horribly miscast.

The studio wanted an actor more known than Pacino, even if said actor was wrong for the part.

Case in point:

Anthony Perkins tried out for the part of Sonny.

He also tried out for the part of Tom Hagan.

Boris Karloff was 44 years old and had already appeared in 75 films before he became famous with Frankenstein in 1931. The studio considered him such an anonymous and insignificant actor that he wasn't even invited to the film's premiere. He was soon Universal's biggest star and they started treating him quite a bit better.

His song "When a Man Loves a Woman" is one of the BEST songs, of ALL-TIME!!

I keep forgetting to post a "Happy Birthday" to Reba McEntire, who had a milestone birthday, just last month----60!

(One of the best concerts I've ever attended. She had this high bridge-thing on the stage; she walked up the steps on one side, crossed the bridge [while singing]; then, when she got to the other side, she went down in an elevator, and when the doors opened, she stepped-out in a different outfit----it was SOOOOO COOL!! She also "flew" out over the audience in one of those little "box-stage" thingys----like you've seen other singers do, now; but, at-the-time, it was UNHEARD OF!)

Apparently, despite the well-known term about Timmy falling down a well, Timmy never fell down a well in the Lassie series.

Nell Carter did Broaday, television, and a few movies.

Her voice was magnificent, her stage presence stunning.

When she was two, her father died from an accidental electrocution.

She was raped at sixteen, the guy threatened her with a gun, I could not find out if there was ever an arrest.....she had a baby girl as the result, who was raised by an aunt.

When Nell got into show business, at twenty-two, she naturally did musicals, including 'Hair', and was in the film version.

In one production of 'Annie', she played Miss Hannigan.....commercials for the show showed a white actress in the role.

Ms. carter was NOT amused.

The 1980's were bad for Nell...there was a suicide attempt, a stay in a detox facility, and her brother died from AIDS.

In '82 she converted to Judaism the marry George Krynicki, to whom she was married for ten years.

She declared bankruptcy twice, endured three miscarriages, divorced her husband, then divorced her new husband after one year.

She survived two brain aneurysms, adopted two boys, and died of heart disease and diabetes.

She was only fifty-four.

She is buried in a Jewish cemetery in Culver City.

R.I.P., Nell.

Wow. I thought she was FABULOUS! I sorta feel sorry for these celebrities who are SOOOO successful OUTSIDE of themselves----yet, suffer so, in private.

Meryl Streep replaced Madonna for the lead in Music of the Heart (1999), and learned to play the violin, for her role, by practicing 6 hours a day, for 8 weeks. NO "method acting", for HER!! !!

How could anyone have thought that Madonna could handle that role?

The movie critic Judith Crist was apparently no fan of Richard Burton, nor Elizabeth Taylor.

Nor was she impressed by their film 'The Sandpiper'.

Her review stated:

'Miss Taylor and Mr. Burton were paid $1,750,000 for performing in 'The Sandpiper'.
If I were you, I wouldn't settle for less for watching them.'
