When you subscribe (top left corner of any thread) or post to a thread, you'll be mailed a thread update alert the next time anyone posts to a thread. Only that one alert - subsequent posts won't generate an alert.

This activity can be disabled by setting "Notify me upon replies by default" in the Posting Defaults section of your profile as "No" (it defaults to "Yes") or, when posting, select the "Notify me when a reply is posted" checkbox underneath the post edit window to activate it just once for your current login session. (setting the profile option means this checkbox is always selected)
That alert mechanism failed for me for some threads, but not all.
