I've heard of people buying decommissioned lighthouses, renovating them into a home, and moving in. That would really be cool.

Alþingi - the parliament of Iceland

Some lighthouses can be very remote but others are easily accessible from the mainland or island on which they are built. I think that Jeremy Clarkson, the Top Gear show host, owns or used to own the Langness lighthouse on the Isle of Man. After he bought it, he got into a huge lawsuit over whether the public could or could not walk down a long established walking path there. He lost.
