No, that's Jasper the Poltergeist. He likes to scare people by pretending to be their shadow and then he disappears before being discovered.

I think they do still scare quite easily.

Having read Herbert West, Reanimator by Lovecraft last night, I'd say he did have the power to scare or at least shock people of the 20s. Rather gross but the sort of thing Jasper might like...
