S - The Scillies

Some islands off the south of England in Cornwall County that are slowly sinking into the ocean as a result of post-glacial rebound in Scotland. The plate kind of tilts with a "fulcrum" somewhere between Scotland and the Scillies so as one end rises, the other falls. Two thousand years ago, the main islands of the Scillies were one island. The area between them is pretty shallow and much is exposed at low tide and you can still see walls built between fields that are underwater as the tide comes in.

I never knew that geological stuff about the Scillies, Eric! I do remember that it was the favourite holiday destination of our Prime Minister in the 1960s and 70s, Harold Wilson, and that he nearly drowned in the sea there in around 1975.

Tuscany: a large area of North-West Italy, known as a holiday destination for wealthy individuals, for cities like Florence and Pisa, and for its Chianti wines.

It was also the area inhabited by the ancient Etruscans, a people of mysterious origin with a non-European language and culture.
