Overdrawn at the Memory Bank by John Varley. Excellent novella; godawful MST3K movie.

The Running Man, by Stephen King (writing as Richard Bachman). (Because of one man in a dystopian future, who has old-fashioned values, against a ruthless corporation, and turned into a crappy movie)

Passing for Human, Jody Scott. The wacky hijinks of Benaroya, telepathic dolphin-creature from Rysemus, on assignment to Earth. Much (ahem) fish-out-of-water comedy, thrilling high-speed chases, and scorching social commentary.

Okayfine. The sequel to Passing for Human, which is I, Vampire. Benaroya, impersonating Virginia Woolf, falls in love with an Earthling - the 700-plus-year-old Transylvanian vampire, Sterling O'Blivion.

Doctor Who: Goth Opera by Paul Cornell (vampires and aliens. No need to be so peevish if I couldn't think of a response :P )

Red as Blood, Tanith Lee. Short-story collection. Twisty and often gruesome retelling of several standard fairy tales. Cinderella? Nowhere near as nice as she's cracked up to be. Haven't seen the book for ages; I used to own a copy, but must have resold it in one of many moving-house purges.

Dammit, I've already posted Witches Abroad.......

Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley (published in 1983, same as Red as Blood)

Oooo! Oooo! The entire Darkover series! Let's see, if I had to pick a favourite... tossup between Darkover Landfall and Two to Conquer.

Assuming 1972's Darkover Landfall, I choose 1972's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S Thompson

Hunter S. Thompson reminds of P.J. O'Rourke. Similar take-no-prisoners attitude. Holidays in Hell and All the Trouble in the World are both hilarious reads, but for the sheer brilliance of its title alone, you can't go past Age and Guile Beat Youth, Innocence, and a Bad Haircut (1995). :D
