While our atmosphere is 62 miles thick in total (100 Km), the Troposphere is only 12 miles (19.3 Km) thick at the equator, and 6 miles (9.65 Km) thick at the north and south pole. Which means it's probably about 8 or 9 miles thick where I am, just north of 45 degrees N.

The Troposphere is the thick, habitable part of the atmosphere. It's the only layer that we can breathe, airplanes can fly in, etc.

This is demonstrably true: Just think of all the stories you've heard of how everyone but Sherpas has to wear an oxygen tank when going up to the summit of Mt. Everest. The mountain is just over 29,000 feet tall, which is 5.5 miles (8.85 Km). If Everest were located at one of the poles, it would be only half a mile short of poking up out of the Troposphere.
