Don't worry - from the people I see around I think most English speaking people have to look up defer in the dictionary

Isn't it kind of strange that on a microscopic level languages are entirely different. And yet, on a macroscopic level they all are similar. There is always a way to order dinner at a restaurant, be it in English or in Sanskrit. Those tiny particles called words and rules of grammar are like from two different planets in English and Sanskrit, but the outcome of your order is in front of you, no matter what language was used to get it, as long as all parties involved know the rules of the game.
