Problem with newer members is that one can never know for sure if they are serious or not. Little by little you learn to know their personal style, and also learn what sort of humor they can tolerate. Then there is, of course, the problem that we don't know each others' background and have no way of knowing in advance what may offend them. I don't try to read people's mind any more, I just type what I type, and if people take offence, it's their problem, not mine.
