Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert (about cloning and the soul at many points, as well as a conspiracy to deal with an invading force)

The Dune novels, now there was a master storyteller at work. That moment when, during tense negotiations, a conference participant leans over and spits on the table, and this is revealed to be a gesture of generosity and goodwill: beautifully handled.

Okay, messiah. Stranger in a Strange Land, Heinlein's classic take on how a Second Coming might unfold.

Starship Troopers by Heinlein. And you're right. I haven't come across a book so rich in cultural and historical background since Lord of the Rings, and LOTR was pretty stuffy by comparison....

We Can Remember It For You Wholesale by Philip K. Dick, because it was made into the movie Total Recall, which was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who also directed Starship Troopers.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K Dick (as well as being turned into a movie with a well known actor in the role, and which deals with metaphysics).

The Sheep Look Up by John Brunner (1972), a warning of impending ecological disaster. The title is taken from Lycidas, an elegy by John Milton:

Quote:
The hungry Sheep look up, and are not fed,
But swoln with wind, and the rank mist they draw,
Rot inwardly, and foul contagion spread....

A Wrinkle in Time, also by Madeleine L'Engle.

I'm assuming that was A Ring of Endless Light!

Edit: Woo hoo! I'm a phoenix!

You mean A Ring of Endless Light.

The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum (published in 1980, same as AROEL)

edit: SleepyDragon! I was doing A Ring Of Endless Light....
