In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, how many different characters had possession of the ring.

Yes,

Boromir had posession when Frodo dropped it
Frodo had posession

Isildur (Second)
Gandalf touched it while Frodo had it (the length of time Gandalf spent researching is not mentioned in the films and seems like overnight but was years). The ring was like "I am going to corrupt you" scaring Gandalf and he didn't pick it up ever again.
Tom Bombadil also had it for a short time after Gandalf, still under Frodo's bearing but Jackson was like "Bombadil who?".
