In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, how many different characters had possession of the ring.

Think carefully ....

like you don't specific if is only the ring of power (in spain "anillo de poder") I give the next review

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky. (Vilya the blue ring ,Elrond; Nenya the diamond ring for Galadriel;Narya, the fire ring for Círdan)
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in stone palaces .
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die.
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
in the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind
in the Land of Mordor where the Shadows stretch.

Isildur (Second)
Gandalf touched it while Frodo had it (the length of time Gandalf spent researching is not mentioned in the films and seems like overnight but was years). The ring was like "I am going to corrupt you" scaring Gandalf and he didn't pick it up ever again.
Tom Bombadil also had it for a short time after Gandalf, still under Frodo's bearing but Jackson was like "Bombadil who?".

Overall in order of getting it, it is:
Sauron
Isildur
Deagol
Smeagol
Bilbo
Frodo
Gandalf
Bombadil
Sam

Maybe there was a river pebble wearing it while it was lost in the Anduin!
