I need more information before I can answer. What sort of painting is it? Representational or abstract? If abstract, cubist or expressionist? If representational, is it a pastoral landscape, a cityscape, still life or a figural? Are we painting ponies or dragons? Fairies or dolphins? Apples or Oranges? These things matter!

I just went for the color I like best. (Which is logical since it shows up most in my tapestries and such.)

I chose red, even though it is not my favorite color, it is a pretty color to start with.

Depends on what we are drawing. I guess I would choose green because I would draw the ground first if it was an outside scene but choosing favourite colour would be purple.
