Tonight, instead of playing World War II Online until bed I should work on my New Year's resolution, which is to get better at guitar. Should I work on Allman Brothers "Rambling Man", Bauhaus "In a Flat Field", Thin Lizzy "Warriors", or Brian Eno "Golden Hours"? Or should I learn some new new chords or a new scale? If I do that I'll end up noodling around and come up with some original tune ideas, which is really enjoyable and inspirational. Learning songs all the way through is more like work and mastering technique. I still can't play any songs all the way through-- after I learn a part I end up experimenting with the notes and chords in different combinations and rhythms. My wife wants me to learn to play a song, I guess to show the kids that it's good to make progress and complete a project.
Maybe I should go with "Rambling Man", since it's pretty simple, it's a "sing-along" kind of song, and it's one of my autistic son's favorites. The thing is, he likes it the way it sounds on the CD. Hearing somebody learning a song can be annoying (try a part of the song, flub it, start over, do better this time, go on to the next part, flub it, try again, try now starting from the top etc.) Think that's what I'll do, though. If it really annoys him, he'll let me know and I'll switch over to noodling with chords and scales.
