Yet another guitar amp.



This is a rather thrashed 100 watt Marshall 4143 from 1979. I had a 4140, which is essentially the same amp in a 2x12' combo configuration instead of the 4x10" configuration of the 4143. These were known as the 'Club & Country' amps, and except for a scarce few later examples, all were made with Brown 'Elephant Hide' Tolex and fawn/ natural grillecloth like the one pictured here.

Marshall amplification made these models from late 1978 to 1980, with leftover stock being sold in late 1981 to early 1982 with charcoal tolex and black grillecloth badged as the then current JCM-800 Series. These were the predecessors to the channel switching amps that Marshall introduced in 1982 and currently still make, though the 4140 had two dedicated channels.

They were also one of the first evolution of the the current style Marshall Combo cabinets that Marshall Amplification switched to with the release of their JCM-800 Series in late 1981. The only preceeding Marshall amps to utilise this style of construction was their Capri line of budget student/practice amps from the early 70's.

During the time that these were made, Marshall combo amps were essentially the head chassis top mounted into the rear of a speaker cabinet.

One of the cool things about this line of Marshall amps was the push/pull pot on the Master volume, which meant that you could get good tones from the amp at relatively modest volume, without torturing your neighbors, unlike nearly all other Marshall amps, which sound absolutely horrible at low volume.
