Sorry, I've been gone for 20 years and don't know who the current governor is. I've eaten at the Big Texan, and that's a hell of a steak, especially when you eat the salad, baked potato, and bread with it. Had a cousin do it. Their BBQ is absolutely awful, though. Yankee style.

I've lived here for 25 years and I still don't know much of this. Some of us just don't collect facts.

Quote:
1. What is our capital?

Austin
Quote:
2. Who is our governor, and what phrase is he known for?

Currently, I'm really not sure, but it used to be Goerge Bush. And a phrase? Kill Sadam?
Quote:
3. Name one professional sports franchise in Texas from each professional sport.

Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros, San Antonio Spurs, Beaumont (Southeast Texas?) Wildcatters..... are there any more professional sports?
Quote:
4. Which Interstate highway in Texas splits into two segments (hint: the same freeway does this again in Minnesota)?

One going north, and therefore odd numbered? I don't know.
Quote:
5. The "Red River Classic" pits UT Austin's football team against which college?

I don't pay attention to college football. And barely to professional football.
Quote:
6. What does our constitution allow us to do, that no other state can?

Be our own country again.
Quote:
7. Which major city can you find the neigborhoods of Montrose, River Oaks, and Clear Lake City?

Clear Lake is near Houston, not familiar with the others.
Quote:
8. What was the town of La Grange known for from 1905 to 1973?

Not a clue.
Quote:
9. At the Big Texan steak house in Amarillo, if you get the 72-oz. steak and eat it, and all the side orders that come with it--in one hour--it's free. If you fail, how much is it?

I've heard but don't remember. A lot. Something like $40-$50.
Quote:
10. What is the name of the ice cream company headquartered in Brenham, about 80 miles northwest of Houston?

Blue Bell?

Capitol - Austin

Governor - lost interest after Ann Richards...;)

Football - Cowboys
Baseball - Rangers

Highways - Hard to say. All I've ever used is 10, 30, and 40...;) Now there's a triple overpass in Dallas that will confuse the @#$ out of ya..;)

Constitution - it's either split up the state, or secede. I think the Union took care of the 2nd..;)

La Grange - the Chicken Ranch (brothel), and some obscure song by ZZ Top...;) Also a bad musical with Dolly Parton...;)

Never been to Amarillo that I know of...probably a bill...;)

Never been to the ice cream place. There's a cool pool with hanging rings in Midland, though...;)

Pakled is a 5th generation Texan, and his ancestor Neil McLennan helped found Waco...;)

As the famous steak’s reputation grew, so did the price. The meal was originally priced at $9.95. By the mid 1990s the price had climbed to $39.50. The popularity of the Texas beef drove the price of the meal to $50.00 just before the millennium. Last year higher market prices for cattle pushed the price to $72.00.

Baseball: Houston Astros, Texas Rangers

They sort of lasso the basketball just before it goes in for the other team.

Seriously though, I liked reading this quiz and its answers. I had forgotten about Rick Perry, but I drove I-35 just yesterday, and had to keep my eyes peeled for the famous split. Ended up in Ft. Worth by mistake about a month ago. :o
So I knew that answer.
Also, Blue Bell is damn fine stuff! 8O It's half the price and half the fat of Häagen Dazs, yet twice as tasty. Of course, someone probably bribes someone to list the fat as lower than it is, because it's simply not possible for ice cream that low fat to taste that good.

[quote="Tim_Tex"]1. What is our capital?
Austin, but I used to think it was Dallas for the longest time.
2. Who is our governor, and what phrase is he known for?
No idea.

3. Name one professional sports franchise in Texas from each professional sport.
Houston Texans, AFL, formerly the Tennessee Oilers; Dallas Cowboys, NFC; Houston Astros (Bseball, Natl League, I think), and there's an American League b-ball team I can't remember at the moment; Houston Rockets, Basketball (don't know which league) Dallas Mavericks, Baskeball, San Antonio Spurs, Basketball...does Texas have hockey???

4. Which Interstate highway in Texas splits into two segments (hint: the same freeway does this again in Minnesota)?
No Idea. The I-10, I-20 and I-40 both go through Texas horizontally, splitting the state width-wise (I've driven all three of them), but can't think of the highways that go north and south. I'm trying to remember the one that I took to drop down from Amarillo to Louisiana, and it goes through Wichita Falls, but I'm drawing a blank on it.

5. The "Red River Classic" pits UT Austin's football team against which college?
No Idea; unfortunately I don't follow college ballgames

6. What does our constitution allow us to do, that no other state can?
Shoot the repo man?

7. Which major city can you find the neigborhoods of Montrose, River Oaks, and Clear Lake City?

No Idea...

8. What was the town of La Grange known for from 1905 to 1973?

I actually used to know this one, but now I can't come up with it. No idea.

9. At the Big Texan steak house in Amarillo, if you get the 72-oz. steak and eat it, and all the side orders that come with it--in one hour--it's free. If you fail, how much is it?
When I last stopped there (in '92) it was around $29.99. Probably close to $50.00 or more now.

10. What is the name of the ice cream company headquartered in Brenham, about 80 miles northwest of Houston?

No idea, but I'll take a guess: 'Blue Bell' (has a cow logo on it)

1. you got it correct

2. Rick Perry, and his phrase was "Adios, Mofo". He was talking to a cameraman after some sort of press conference. Gov. Perry is widely know for shooting his mouth off, and for the controversial HPV vaccine legislation last year.

3. The Oilers are now the Tennessee Titans, and still owned by Bud Adams, who is known for his world-famous toupee. Jeff Fisher, the coach during the last years of the Oilers, is still their coach. We have one NHL hockey team, the Dallas Stars. If you could MLS soccer, the Houston Dynamo is doing very well. As for basketball, you can count the Houston Comets of the WNBA.

4. I-35 is the one that splits. The other highway you're thinking of is U.S. 287, which goes from Port Arthur, near Louisiana, all the way up to Montana. Also, there's I-30, which goes to Little Rock.

5. UT vs. OU

6. We can split into as many as 5 states. So far, this has never been done. But shooting the repo man sounds cool, too. :D

7. They're all in Houston. Montrose is where the counterculture and GLBT communities are based. River Oaks is the most expensive neighborhood, and is where all the business executives live. CLC is generally an upscale neighborhood, but not nearly as expensive as River Oaks, and is where NASA is.

8. La Grange is known for the Chicken Ranch, the brothel from the play/movie The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Dom Deluise's character, Melvin Thorpe, is based on Marvin Zindler, a world-famous news reporter in Houston, who led the expose' on the Chicken Ranch back in 1973. He was also famous for his Friday night "rat & roach" reports, which served to inform potential diners of health violations at Houston restaurants. He was awarded a lifetime contract with the station that hired him, and continued to report until his death last year--at the age of 86.

9. It's $72 now, but could be higher, given how much food prices are rising.

10. you got it correct.

4. I-35
5. OU
6. Not sure, but I'd bet it has to do with alcohol laws
7. Not sure, know it isn't Dallas, Houston maybe?
8. Where LBJ lived? Wild guess.
9. I've heard of that place, don't know the price, I believe it's more than $100
10. Blue Bell?
