What happens when we reach 4,000 in Roman numerals?

The convention for expressing denominations larger than 1,000 in roman numerals is to add extra lines around the symbols for 1,000 and 500, so 5,000 is represented as either D) or |)), 10,000 is represented as either (M) or ((|)), 50,000 is represented as either D)) or |)), etc.

Didn't they also add bars over the letters?

The usual convention is to draw a bar over the number to indicate multiplication by one thousand...However
BB code and the Windows character map do not support this....
I suggest for purposes of this game we use square brackets to indicate thousands ie: [IV]=4000 or we could use
a lower case k in parentheses next to the number....
IV(k)=4000
IX(k)=9000
CM(k)=900,000
MM(k)2,000,000
