OOC: Mutanatia and I are moving this over from another forum. Basically its a sports court with different national teams (The old forum was an adjunct to a nation simulator.) Would anyone else like to sign on with us?

IC:

Understanding well that the establishments of the courts were to be done in a timely manner, the city of Persopolis was selected to host them. It was debated whether there should be a new building constructed, or if an old one should be utilized. Finally, an abandoned structure was chosen as its revitalization would indicate the ‘newness’ that this project hoped to generate.

Renovations on a brutalist architectural tower were quickly completed and the interior was freshly done. Without the hands-tied feeling that usually comes with many government projects, this was spearheaded by Mallumo and therefore was free of such. Local stores were plundered for their products, and merchants were all the wealthier for it. Furthermore, being able to purchase from any source to paint and furnish the rooms was a great bane and cost-cutter for the project.

As was stated in subsection b of the sports court policy, Shah Tiberius VI of Mallumo would be the presiding member of the court. Therefore, the royal envoy was at the opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, which took up the better part of two hours. Having finished the ceremonial aspects of the operation, he quickly settled into the main concourse, despite the urging of his staff to do so otherwise.

Having completed his inspections there, it was a short period of time before he met himself to the bench and settled fully into his position, still wearing the garments of a member of the aristocracy, as he had been before at the last meeting establishing this. He was ready, wholly and in earnest, to preside.

A week went by before the participants of the first case, Mantis and Heinz Grumel, could start, having been able to finish the football season. Heinz Grumel lead the charge as they started.

"Your honor," Heinz Grumel said, turning to face towards Mantis. "As you are aware, the Federation Jets recently concluded a season in which they finished witha 6-8 record, and were eliminated from the playoffs. I contend that it was the fault of the coach, President Mantis, for the team's poor performance."

"But, we were in first at one point--"

"But, however, "Heinz Grumel says, interrupting Mantis. "The thing is: The sole person who is responsible for the team is the coach, and the coach alone is responsible for the team's falling from 1st place to last place and--"

"It was the fault of the players--"

"Players that you--"

"Players that--"

The two begin talking over each other.

Striking his gavel against the bench that he was seated at, Shah Tiberius VI immediately demanded order from the two who were bickering amongst one another. First hearing Heinz Grumel's points when the meeting came to order, considering that the complaints were always heard before the defense against them, he listened carefully with a nod. Secondly, he heard out Mantis's comments.

Paying careful attention to each set, he formulated a question to ask the pair in return.

“Were the players performing to the height of their athletic ability, regardless of the coaching?”

He then struck the gavel again, anticipating chaos.

Heinz Grumel nodded. "I would say yes, your honor. This is because we were in first at one point."

Mantis butts in. "But, however, you can't say that that is the only indicator."

"Yes I can..."

"How can you say that? If we lost 5 games in row, then we clearly weren't performing--"

"To the best of your ability. However, had you tried different strategies, I think things would have worked."

"THey would not have--"

"Yes, they would have. Your honor, I am convinced that the cause of our losing season was caused by a coach who had chosen the wrong strategy. Consider the team who won. They all used pasing."

He banged down the gavel again and began to look disgusted, "Can you two not speak once at a time? If you cannot, I shall have to follow through with the unhappy duty of dismissing you both. Grummel, you will speak. You have two minuets. When those two minuets are up, then Mantis will speak for two minuets. Then I will decide if either of you deserve to have any further time."

The two minutes for Grumel began and Mantis had to bite her tongue to avoid speaking.

"Your honor, it is plain to me that the athletes were playing at the top of their ability. This is because they had been in first at least 4 times before suffering a mammoth collapse. This collapse can be attributed to President Mantis's lack of knowledge of the sport. She clearly had been using the wrong strategy. Consider the Saints or the Oilers. They used a passing strategy which didn't eat up the clock if incomplete. We used a running strategy which summarily ate up the clock, regardless of the consequence of the play. Additionally, we should have gone for it on 4th and short."

Mantis then spoke. "Your honor, it is plain to me that, though the athletes were playing at the top of their ability, they were quite simply overmatched. As a result, we lost miserably to the Oilers in the playoffs. At any rate, we won't be returning next season as per protocol. But I look forward to two years from now we we put on the best display of talent the world has ever seen!"

The two turned to The Shah for his next directive.

The Shah shook his head, having listened to both sides, "It is clear that we simply need another demonstration. Mantis will be the coach for two exhibition games. She will also coach four regular season games. At that time, this court will rate her performance. And that will be next season. A judicial institution is not a law making establishment. However, it is well within its power to set precedent. I am declaring the old rules of playoff continuation to be defunct." Again he struck his gavel.

Mantis nods. "Then I shall get my team back together again. Has anyone any objections as to whether or not I change team names?"

Heinz Grumel speaks up. "When are these exhibition games supposed to be held? And your honor, it was a complete and total losing season. Surely she should be replaced as coach?"

Striking his gavel again, the Shah's head shook, "You do not know what either of you are getting into. If either of you shall continue to speak without the express request to speak, you will be removed from all of these proceedings. Do either of you have a complaint regarding this ruling? Grummel first. You have two minuets."

Heinz Grumel spoke. "Your honor, considering that the team was in first at one point, and did not start out in last place, I find this collapse to be of the most heinous degree. Thus, I move that Mantis needs to come out of the games with a winning record if she is going to keep her job."

The Shah nodded to this, exhaling as he thought, “If you believe this to be a necessary legal motion, you have made it properly. Therefore, I see no reason not to sustain your motion – it has been. Mantis is hereby required to come out of the season with a winning record to keep her position as head coach.”
