Just thought of this and thought it would be a nice idea to try this and see if it takes off.

All you have to do is post your "fact of the day", it can be about anything you want, just keep it clean!

Only one fact a day though so be quick and you are allowed to post about posted facts in here.

I'll start:

Bram Cohen, inventor of BitTorrent, has Asperger's

(random, TBH) :D

Random fact.

Oxygen molecules do not have a double chemical bond between the atoms, the bond in a ground state oxygen molecule is a single bond (triplet). The molecule is a biradical, each oxygen atom as an unpaired electron. Oxygen gas is magnetic as a result.

As a result oxygen does all manner of "funny" things such as make fat go rancid and ret*d the formation of polystyrene from the monomer.

In all of the Sherlock Holmes stories and novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
not once does Sherlock ever use the phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson".

actually, that's true. Ocassionally he would do a promotional shot where he would eat a carrot, and afterwards he would spit it out into a bucket.

My Fact:
More people are killed every year by coconuts falling on their head, than those killed by killer sharks! :P

There is a small frog who has been living in my kitchen window for about a year. Sometimes it sits in the sink.

In a bee hive, there's a 34°C temperature all year 'round.
Iguanas, Koala-bears, and komodo-dragons have two penises.
Cays have 32 muscles in their ears.
The oldest known goldsfish made it to 41 years. His name was Fred.
On the earth, there are enough nuclear missiles to destroy humanity. 50.000 times.
There are over 850 million pigs.
A 68 KG human would weigh 250 tons on the Sun.

Random, and useless, facts.

Lake Van is the largest lake in Turkey, and also one of the largest endorheic lakes in the world. This is one of the few facts that has stuck with me from "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego".

Genetically speaking, the closest living relative to the whale is the hippopotomus. (From Richard Dawkin's "The Ancestor's Tale")

Fact: If your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you. If her tail starts thrashing, her mood has changed --- Time to distance yourself from her. :cat:

My canned beans are weird looking,I should probably rinse and cook them before eating.

#2
The fork as an eating utensil was introduced in the Middle East before the year 1000. First introduced to Europe in the 10th century by Theophanu, Byzantine wife of Emperor Otto II, the table fork had, by the 11th century made its way to Italy. The fork's arrival in northern Europe was more difficult. For many years it was viewed as an unmanly Italian affectation. The Roman Catholic Church expressly disapproved of its use: "God in his wisdom has provided man with natural forks — his fingers. Therefore it is an insult to Him to substitute artificial metallic forks for them when eating." It was not until the 18th century that the fork became commonly used in Great Britain.
