Just thought I'd try this out: -

Here's how it goes - whoever posts has to add a line to the song... it can be anything - happy or sad, whatever.

I'll start I guess

I woke up this morning... :-P

Praying to Heaven's above

Thanks syzygyish :) It was inspired by McTell's "Blues" thread.

(But I am going to participate in this
way cool idea Samtoo thought up.

BTW, maybe I should learn to play the drum
set as well in order to provide a good groove
for others to work the blues into these lyrics.)

Gonna have some fun now, hope that heaven isn't mar'd

(are there 'rules' to the blues?
If there are, I don't know'em!
Is there any structure or rhythm or syncopation or style or history or tradition we should know about?)

Ah it's ok syzygyish - you're not on trial here lol. :D Generally, there's like 4 lines to a verse kinda thing... like I woke up this morning, then another line of similar length, etc.

Think this is the third line... Singing songs 'bout ma and pa (I dunno lol)

Often in blues the first two lines are repeated before there's a new two lines e.g. Woke up this morning/ had them Statesboro Blues/ Woke up this morning/ had them Statesboro Blues/ Looked 'round the corner/ Grandma and granpa had 'em too; but that wouldn't work for this game. There are other line arrangements like one line three times then another line. 4 different lines arrangement is used too. If in doubt, end the line with something that rhymes with "blues."

I think in blues, you do two lines at a time, with six syllables (or beats, or whatever you call it) in the first line, and five syllables in the next line. Then, whatever word you end on, you rhyme with it at the end of the next two lines. Like so:

"I got me a la-dy, (6)
as ug-ly as sin." (5)

"a big ug-ly wo-man, (6)
with hair on her chin." (5)

Would that be a good formula to use?
