Once I found out I was on the spectrum, it kind of gave me permission to stop forcing myself to be sociable. That "get out of jail free card" served to greatly reduce my stress level.

Ditto. I'm happier already.

100%

When I was young, I could deal with everything way better.
Now I get overstimulated so bad, that I struggle to do even groceries.
The older I get, the less I am capable to suppress the symptoms.

Fortunately (for me at least) I find that the societal margins for displaying "symptoms", when we age, gets larger.
I stim in plain sight and no-one confronts me anymore, they all seem to 'accept it', and I'm not talking about colleagues that have known me for 30years. Just people in the street, I remember in my mid 20's that people would walk up to me and feel it to be their mission in life to set me straight. :) :)

Used to be alot more patient with people and things. Its the people crud, that seems to take me longer to get over these days . Still am surprised, when folks that I do not know well, that wish to appear to me that we have been friends along time. Now sends me running . Cause usually the very next step is to be gaslighted by those same persons
