For every one it is different, Some people can handle weed and some can not. For me pot helps slow down my thoughts so I can actually get them down on paper before they leave me.
It is not addictive if you use it moderately. And even if you use heavily it is still not bad to come off of.
As far as people saying I’ll only take drugs if my doctor prescribes them, well I have a prescription for pot.
To the anti-drug folks Let me ask you this: If a anti-depressant or a medication for ADHD works for you and you keep taking it. Are you addicted?
My advise to you would be go into the bath room, turn the lights down low, put on some soft music, smoke a bowl, take a hot shower, and let the creativity flow. ( I always do my best thinking in the shower). And you'll find out if it's for you or not.
whenever i write poetry 9/10 i just smoked marijuana right before with the intent to draw inspiration because im not naturally a creative guy and i've always been more creative while high and after the marijuana wears off people compliment me on my pems

Of the herb I approve and I think you can view it in a similar way to alcohol (for some an alternative)
It is important to consider tolerance and as mentioned it's not everyone's 'thing' (as per any drug, caffeine onward)
Big sessions/comical size smokes arguably have their place, but not in the creative context and I think you can be surprised by how little is needed to just relax the ol' brainbox a tad. If the creative feeling is there it may help relax you and focus in. That or a little spaced out, in which case get something good to watch and nice to eat! [make your own joke there if needed, you know what I mean]

At least that's what a friend told me!
I have a personal theory (one of many, ha!) that positive creativity and 'original' work comes from having an interest in the process and working hard to explore your interest. Like a particular author or story? What was the context of the creation? What are the influences? Investigate. Look at the how the story is constructed. Read things with unusual storytelling narrative devices. Read things out of your comfort zone. Perhaps exploring the connections between works will get you into areas you wouldn't have considered previously. Perhaps even appreciate things you have previously dismissed. Allow your curiosity to wander. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself. A wide, diverse base of knowledge/influence trickling into your work theoretically should produce something that is more 'unique'. Although still direction is needed, as is a degree of personality/self. Sometimes a little harder to do, particularly when said self has to be put on stage for the entertainment of others. Write about what you know is a good rule to consider. And 'To thine own self be true' as one well quoted writer put it!
As wisely stated, practice is key. Be careful not to burn yourself out though, one surprisingly effective technique is to just leave it all. Don't read or have anything to do with it for a few days. Just say 'sod it' and walk away. When you do return perhaps you'll find your brain has had time to digest all you have thrust upon it and where was struggle is now ease. For all the hassle sometimes it may be, remember that slowly but surely the process will become much more natural. Hopefully more enjoyable too!
[I'll stop now before reaching the point where this develops to a crazy love/hate relationship, long enough post as it is!]
Lots of wise words already shared. Plenty of food for thought..
And, hello, I'm new here.
(Does it take anyone else ages to write a message? Takes me hours! Hope I'm making some sense)
For me alcohol in moderation works wonders. I'm lucky enough to be a happy drunk. Alcohol loosens my inhibitions just enough to shut off the negative scripts I have running in my head so I can just let the creativity flow without self recrimination. Pot doesn't do that for me. But everyone reacts differently.

ah yes, I hear you.
It amuses and confounds me to this day that my wannabe hippy English teacher could not fathom the fact that my -work of genius- or whatever she called it was actually two or three page sof BS concocted especially for her overly suggestive and deluded mind.
she told us to pick a pot or art piece or whichever in her room and just write about it. For the nearly first time, suddenly I had my cue fromthe universe and I shone for once, I mean, everyting aligned, stars planets, brain cells, and i was ableto write. too bad she was too self-absorbed to really notice me.

Since I discovered that, i never looked back.

not published yet though, i have certain loops I get in still taht prevent that i think.
how old is your son now?
