Living only for yourself can be incredibly unrewarding.

Most people with these kind of complaints are suffering from a lack of meaning. Their efforts are disconnected from any greater narrative. Last Man stuff. Nietzsche said that when there is no meaning to existence, we have to invent it. So find meaning in your life, or make it.

I think that's incredibly wise.

Not to discount the value of introspection, but in the long run I don't believe looking inward is enough, and there comes a time in everyone's life when they need to look beyond themselves. You don't really find out what's inside you until you give it away.

In whatever way makes the most sense to you ... be it religion, volunteer work, or simply a pet ... find something beyond yourself to commit to.

I agree with Sam. We get into habits of negative thinking and get stuck. Do the things and think the thoughts that make you happy, and life begins to look a lot more uplifting. BTW, has anyone read Victor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning?" It might help....
