If empty car spaces are randomly distributed, there is the same probability that there will be an empty spot right outside the door of the shop you want to go to as any other particular spot, so its best to go direct to where you want to get to and then look for a car park. You don't look for a car park until you get to where you want to be.

Perfectly logical.

I doubt that assumption is valid in many real-world examples...

What I want to know is this. Men and parking; no it's not sexist, they really do do this. Why do men drive past empty parking spaces to park in one that's exactly the same size, distance to the shops, width between cars etc. further down the row. Why don't they just park in the first available slot?

Could it be that you're driving up behind them and observing their behaviour is putting them off :D

That does actually seem to be true! Well, for male drivers anyway. When they do that of course they get a slot right by the shop or wherever they want to be. When I do that, there are no slots where I want to be and all the empty slots I've driven past have now filled up.

The ancient god of parking, FordNissanToyota, is obviously male

Oh no. I mean, you wouldn't feel put off if you saw, in your rear view mirror, some crazy woman in the car behind you mouthing 'just park the flippin' thing!' would you?

Why do men always insist on reversing into spaces while women often drive in forwards & then reverse out?

(I don't know about other women, but I do the latter because I am invariably late & just want to get parked as quickly as possible & the manouvering can wait until later.

Yes, I drive in forwards too. It seems more logical to reverse out into an open space.

Do all those people who have "Clean fill dirt wanted" signs in their yard know that dirt, by definition, is dirty and not clean. :D (I can't help thinking that whenever I see one of those signs)

*As for reversing out, I feel that I'm less likely to hit another car that way. Of course that means I'm more likely to run over a kid, but hey I like cars (j/k). I can actually back-in to spaces better but it makes me nervous to do so.

Men + shopping = the hunt. Reversing into the parking space carefully is part of creeping up on the prey, and ensures a swift getaway when you've got what you came for. It's also a little more logical from the safety point of view. You've got a much better view of what's coming outside the parking space.

Actually, with the steering being on the front wheels it is a lot easier to reverse into a tight space.

The car is more manouverable because the car moves through an arc at the front and pivots on the rear wheels.

This means you can reverse into a tight space in one smooth move.

If you try to enter a tight space forwards you are more likely to have to move back and forth several times to strighten the vehicle up.

Hope this helps.

I'd like to know why people invariably screw the tops back onto bottles before putting them in the bin.

Why do they do this? :?:

It serves no purpose and actually takes up more room in the bin because squashy bottles can't be squashed with the tops on.

:?

It would make more sense to squash the air out first, then screw the top back on to keep the air out.

I do that.

Why do men always have control of the TV remote control?

Probably. If only those power issues extended to other areas...'no, I have control of the iron, and I'm the only one who can use it!' lol.

I wouldn't let my wife wash dishes or
clothes. :P

We didn't have a TV remote, but she
was the only one who used the CD one.
(though, to be honest, there was no reason
for me to do so - she only used it when pleasuring
me).
