It's rather painful, yes. Perhaps it's time for me to write a letter to the local paper in order to get the thing removed. I'm all in favour of tougher policing but indiscriminately punishing a man with a white stick who is no harm to anyone isn't going to do them any favours.

I don't think they deserve the respect of a well written letter. I can't begin to express how oppressive that machine is, especially considering it's targeted to a specific group of people.

The chain supports all stores that use this piece of equipment. As I say, I do my shopping at Somerfield. They're nicer people inside anyway.

I could never justify the benefits towards commercialism at the cost of human suffering.

Tequila--

What about contacting the police? Or a disability advocates group? If this is painful to you, then the store should be sensitve to that. Just because they don't want teens hanging out like hooligans in front of their store doesn't mean you should suffer.

Civil liberties groups are already working on getting rid of this thing. Excruciating is overdoing it but it certainly is unpleasant. Time to get another letter written, methinks.

You go, boy.

Ironically, the noise is used for kids' cell phones so they can get calls without the grownups knowing, though I think it was originally developed as an environmental irritant to shoo kids away.

Now if someone could come up with a deterrant to use outside of my favorite coffee shop so I don't have to wade through the homeless and drunken humanity...oh, wait, there is such a thing--affordable housing and treatment!

Off tangent there.

Good luck, Tequila. If the store is concerned about kids hanging out, then they need either a manager with a stern attitude, or poison ivy. I dunno.

the box should be filled with some insulation foam spray. I think it might block out much of the sound.

They spent all that money on research and gadgets to disperse teenagers.

All they had to do was play loud classical music and watch 'em run before their coolness is stripped away.

yarrrr!

I resent all this talk about how teenagers don't like classical music, first off I am technically not a teenager any more but I have enjoyed classical music since a very young age. The first CD I ever bought was an arrangement of many famous classical pieces.

Sorry

How many little kids are going to be unfairly punished for having fits because this thing drives them nuts but the parents can't hear it so the parents just assume the kids are acting up?

Whenever you see those devices, smash them. Public or not. We're not animals, and that stupid thing reminds me of those invisible gates people have for their dogs.

I wonder if that "skeeter" noise has caused seizures? I know that certain lights and certain types of electronic music can cause a variety of seizures...in adults as well as kids.

Shoot, if fluorescents can give me migraines...

I have lived next door to two boys who yell and bellow all day long, and two little girls who like to practice 'screaming' regularly. I don't see why I should be subjected to that sort of aural assault.

Ah, but that's just the point of using classical music: the teens it won't drive away are not likely to be the ones causing trouble, who need to smash something up because they're too bored. I too like classical music and liked it as a teenager, but you have to admit it's pretty rare.
