Mum2ASDboy - Thanks! Your assistance paid off in finding at least one travel wholesale company that offers visa support. They dont have job opening at the moment but its a LOT more than I could find in a year's time. You rock!

jdbob: what's your company? You don't need to go in as a business owner.. if your education and work experience give you enough points you can get residence permit and set up shop there. I think that as a business owner you get a lot of points because it makes you 'senior management' equivalent in work experience. As long as you can prove you have the skills or the ability to NOT be a drain on the NZ economy you'll be eligible. They do not want people going there and then becoming welfare recipients.

Really?! Wow that is soooooooooooo cool :D So glad I could help, don't you just love the internet!! !! !! !

I'm assuming you are referring to the "skilled migrant" category. That category is geared towards formal education and youth, and I have neither

My company writes software for a company in Massachusetts that builds earthquake recording software. GNS Science in Lower Hutt is one of our customers.

NZ immigration considers managerial/ownership experience much higher than formal education when it is a business (education for sciences only really). You could probably get a high score just for that.

Never hurts to try :)

Where to start... Well I've been doing alot of research about different places in the world, because I want to move out of my country (usa). For the longest time I had my heart set on Japan, but my reasons for wanting to go there were a bit childish. Simply hot asian chicks, anime, and history doesn't merit permanently living there, perhaps just a few vacations.

The more places I look at, I seem to be drawn toward New Zealand, but I know very few people that even know what a kiwi is, let alone anything about the country. I'm wondering if anyone here lives there, if we have anyone that's just vacationed there, family there, anything really.

From what I gather, it seems to be more democratic and "free" than the USA. Nature is obviously breathtakingly beautiful there, with relatively little pollution. Things I'm looking for are like.... Economy, Job Market, Industry\Production, Education, Crime, Other things about the society and people, Stability, and others I can't remember.

Really any feedback from people who know alot about NZ would be helpful.

Well

IM a kiwi...

haha

thought I'd represent the country with my login :P

hehe... we have a lot pride us kiwis :D

its a good country personally I prefer Aussie more money mopre jobs but yea nz is my home so i love it well ...
yea its ok...

reckon aussie has a better "positive attitude" on life :D
kiwis seem to be very negative............ hmmm theres a few posts an articles on the net about that :P lol found out a radio star was talking about it the other day to confirm "my" opininon lol good to be backed up by someone who others listen too :P hmm...

"I've had lots of jobs tell me they'll hire me on the spot because of my experience in international travel and because I've personally traveled a bit... but always the 'but you will need to have a work visa'. Sad I couldn't take a REALLY well paid job offer because of that... and I cannot get a work visa without a job offer.. its a weird self-defeating bureaucratic loop. *sigh*"

yea sounds like a bad circle

well feel free to PM me as well Id love to recruit some more kiwis eh ASD mum ... lol.. nz holds its arms wide open haha.. trying to get more people from all those kiwis flying to aussie :P...

Another nz state is gold coast in australia apparently kiwis own 70% of property/realestate there wow thats a lot dont know if i believe that.. tried googling but cant find evidence BUT yea my cousin who lives there told me he read it in a newspaper :)

well ok who am i trying to sell here nz vs aus both.. ive lived in both :D

I'm a true blue kiwi (another with the name!!). I've lived in the UK for the past two years but I've had enough - I'm moving home and I can't wait!!

There's a huge 'brain drain' and skills shortage here at present, so they're looking for people with skills etc to move to the country. So if you've got a talent or qualification it shouldn't be too difficult to get in.

You can PM me too all you like - I'm working on talking my english partner into moving back with me in a few months so I've got lots of info on me at the moment!! ;)

Thanks fellas. I consider myself given a carte blanche to abuse your knowledge of kiwiland :)

For myself my problem is only my education.. thats the one thing that would give me the points to go there even without a job offer.

So at the moment i'm considering going there as a student and getting a degree there (that way I get 4 things accomplished:

1- I'm there
2- I can get even more points for having NZ work experience since I can work part-time while studying.
3- I get an NZ qualification & dont have to bother or worry about spending 2 years for a degree here in the US and then find out NZ doesnt consider it a valid diploma.
4- I get the time spent studying as bonus 'points' towards residence status application. pretty much I finish degree and instantly the 2 years in student visa count as 2 years work visa and I can apply for residence instantly.

Only problem now is saving up to do it and planning out the costs of living there. (thats where ye all come in :D )

Cost of living, well...........
That depends on what city you want to live in.
Do you want to buy a house or rent one?
If you like you diary products (milk, cheese, yoghurt) then start saving  I saw a kilo of cheese in the supermarket for over $14 8O .
Petrol is around $1.77 litre. BUT if you spend over $40 at a supermarket you can get 4cents (at least) off a litre at certain petrol stations. Oh and most of them here are self service.
PM me if you want to know more :)

Hey you should come here first for a hoilday to have a look around!!

I think Nzers are a bit more reserved than americans. We are not that gun crazy either which is good.
I find americans a little unnerving because they always say "OH MY GOD!"

We also have McDonalds here, so you should feel at home. ;)

well, im not American as in US born.. im from South America but I've lived in the US for 10 years.

Guns? never had one.
Reserved? that pretty much describes me.
mcdonalds? hate it. (Burger King much better but I barely buy a hamburger every 2 months).

I'd love to take a holiday there but the airfare is prohibitive since I live on the East Coast. The best fare i've found is like 1700 USD. :( Thats like a month and a half paycheck for me at the moment just for the air.

How's that work exactly? I've thought about leaving the US, but I never considered NZ until I saw this thread. I think I'd prefer Europe still, NZ is just too damn far from everything.
