Usually, when a dog is barking in my neighbourhood, someone makes a complaint to the local council (ie. local government department) and the owners of the animal get sent a warning letter in the mail. After too many warnings, either (a) the owner has to pay a fine, or (b) the animal is confiscated and taken to the pound.
I dunno what sort of department you would complain to where you are in the world, maybe you could make some calls and find out who to contact. Also check with any other neighbours and ask if the dog bothers them as well.

Here in Ontario...we have what is called the: SPCA...."society for the prevention of cruelty to animals".....they are very "underfunded"....and struggle....because of lack of $$....

for the most part I must admit to being ignorant about calling the local authorities....in my neighbourhood it would be the cops....and because we are crammed in together like freaking sardines....and when Friday night rolls around....(well....you can just imagine!!)....a person has to be particularly careful about not calling the cops too often...

The weekends....are crazy....noisy.....barking dogs, screaming whooping drunks...the whining screech of lawnmowers....(why the h**ll have a lawn....clover is easier!...sorry not trying to be judgemental)....and of course the high pitched whirr of the weed cutter....and oh....did I mention barking freaking dogs...

The point is: I was advised to check out "barkingdogs.net" and came up with some ideas....gave a copy of them to my neighbour....(under windshield wiper of car)....and have not heard the dog barking since....

Thank G....for that suggestion....cause the SPCA wouldn't be able to afford to check it out and the cops would have laughed and then probably arrested me for bugging them!

My neighbourhood.......right now as we speak....quiet dog......loud buzzing, roaring lawnmower....I really need to remember to buy ear plugs... :)

you are not going to believe what I just figured out!

I put on "ear-phones" and am currently listening to John Lennon....."Imagine".....

can't hear the lawmower......or the dog...

Why did it take me this long to figure this out?

Hope the little guy has quieted down for you, it wouldn't be much fun to have to ear earphones all the time...

If he hasn't...just keep bugging the law enforcement/local government/animal welfare groups. In the states they are all in communication because one person neighbor usually calls the cops while the other call the SPCA about the same dog and so on. There's a lot of bureaucracy with who handles animal control cases as the little funding that the organizations get is tightly regulated by the donors. Just be persistent, if you can.

You might also have some luck contacting a local dog trainer/behaviouralist who could offer his or her services for the owners. If he's barking out of anxiety it's relatively likely that he has some other anxiety related issues. If hey don't care enough to help the dog feel safe now and he starts to destroy stuff they might want to get rid of him. Anxiety for a shelter dog is basically a death sentence.

Pet stores, vets, and other animal rescues can put you in contact with a trainer. The ones in my area would have no problem knocking on a strangers door and saying there have been some complaints about their dogs barking and they would like to help. Like socialized petcare :)

Best case scenario--the owners are working with the dog to quiet him down and it's just taking a long time. Some of us take longer to get through our issues than others

Good luck.

 totally true about the head phones...and that night I put the head phones on I must have listened to Lenin's .."Imagine"....a zillion times....not that it's bad....cause it's such an amazing tune...

What you said about the "red tape thing" in the states is probably pretty well true here also...especially the part about the "low funding"....I wish the SPCA could be better funded...there are so many "sweet dogs and cats" out there that deserve good homes. Our local shelter has volunteers who walk the dogs - but a person has to be able to love the animal but be very detached at the same time...no small feat.

Maybe that why I got so obsessed with the "happy dogs at the beach thread"......it's wonderful to see them roaming...and free...in the water...walking the sand - chasing seagulls....without tether...collar...or chain....just living their lives free...if only for a few hours at the beach! :)

The dog next door who was barking incessantly has completey stopped...I haven't heard him.
"Lepidoptera" suggested a web site and I followed up with it....printed out a copy of suggestions...including the idea, that they may not know that the dog was in so much distress when they were away....anyway....I have not heard him since.

I would like to go over and talk to them in person....I'm too .... :alien: .....for that...so I'm just hoping and praying that they didn't realize that he was in distress and took the suggestions to heart and gave him what he needed. It seems like they really do love their pet...because I haven't heard him since....
It helped me too....because even though I was too chicken to talk to them....I made a step by giving them the information...
and if it alleviated an animals distress (and mine).... 8)

Yay for both of you!

I'm glad that he seems to feel better.

And you did better with the owners than I would have been able. And it's my job to help people fix their problems with dogs. I'd be super shy unless they came to me for input. It's that not-being-able-to-interact-socially-unless-I-have-a-role Aspie thing.

Anyway. Congrats on the problem solved!

I do not like the sounds of barking dogs.

True story: When I was about 17 I busted my window with my hand from banging on it trying to get my dog with a very annoying bark to shut up so that I could sleep. I still have the scars. My dad told me to "bang on the window". I took him literally, he meant for me to bang on the window frame. :(

Remember that I was totally shy also.....the best that I could do was put the note under the wiper of their car...and hope for the best....

I was all excited...thinking that it worked!! ! and it did beause I haven't heard the dog barking....but when we drove by them the other day, we saw them with "said yappy puppy" going for a walk with his beloved masters....

p.s. ladygirl......go to barkingdogs.com and it may give you some ideas....it helped me....

more than that though.....it sounds to me like your love and good energy vibes may go out into the world and have an effect greater than you are giving yourself credit for.....keep the faith and keep up the good work!....sounds to me like you have a lotta love to offer these beautiful beasts....don't for a minute think that it won't have an effect!! ! just do what you do....and trust it! :) :)

Arbie: don't you worry.......I take "every-fu**cking thing literally.....(it's okay)....normal aspie thing... :)
what helps me: when I'm really melting down over the noise is to visualize their faces, their beautiful eyes....and noses....and their beauty....

look at my thread about happy dogs at the beach.....that may be a good visual ....to help....

and no worries!! :)
