Current perseverations: Ironically, autism has fascinated me since I was in my 20's, although I didn't know about Asperger's until recently. Also learning differences such as dyslexia have been a major fascination. This is a good thing since my 7 yo is probably on the spectrum somewhere. Other major interests are books, especially science fiction/fantasy, soap making, cosmetics even if I don't actually wear them, religion (which covers a whole lot more than just organized religion eg, why are humans religious in the first place?) and just about anything that grabs my interest. I love the internet.

When did you discover AS? I've been interested in autism for a very long time, but it wasn't until recently that I came across Asperger's in an attempt to figure out my daughter's difficulties with school. Well, it explains a lot of my differences too.

Do you have other psych diagnoses? Major depression (yeah duh), bipolar II (not), ADHD (probably not, never mind the official dx)

Do you have a degree? BA 2005, Religious Studies with a Women Studies minor

Kids? DS 31 and his wife, plus my four grandkids: 8, 5, 2, and 14 mo. DD 28. DS2 17. Kayli 7. I don't know that any of my kids are entirely NT. DS2 has developmental delays, especially in speech. Kayli may be on the spectrum. Probably.

Favorite music, other than NIN  Celtic, Moody Blues, Blind Faith, Joan Baez. Not favorites are Mariachi, which is unfortunate given where I live, rap, cry in your beer CW, death metal

Job? not at the moment, but I'm an accountant

Relationship with significant other, past or present? Yes

Plans for the future? To get a job that more or less suits me, and to do what I can to ease Kayli's way. If it happens that I help ease others' like her, so much the better.

What is your first name? - Mike

Age: 50

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Current perseverations: AS, fitness (walking) - the list actually used to be quite long, but these two are taking up all my time, lately.

When did you discover AS? "Discovered" it about 18 years ago, but actively avoided looking into the mirror, so to speak. About a month ago, I decided that my life might actually be better if I owned up to what I already knew subconsciously - and so far, it appears I was right!

Do you have other psych diagnoses? No.

Do you have a degree? Bachelor of Music Education

Kids? No.

Favorite music, other than NIN  - Kate Bush, Fiona Apple, Poe, The Dresden Dolls, Liz Phair, Kate Voegele, ... (love female vocalists!! !)

Job? Technical Illustrator/CAD

Relationship with significant other, past or present? A few - never to the point of marriage or living together. Most recent was 1979-81.

Plans for the future? I would really like to find a way to connect closely to another human being (I am working on it, but it can be a struggle.)

Anything else you feel is pertinent: Not that I can think of at the moment.

Hello ppl, I've always thought i was different, and now i know i am, I saw a physcologist yesterday afternoon in Covenrty, UK, and after a 3 hour talk and discusion, and a test looking at eyes, was told, yes you have it.
Its now 7.30am and I'm still in a state of flux. On the one hand I feel relived, on the other, im thinking about the future.

Maxine, the person who tested me said that in AS ppl, the part of the brain that intuitivley 'knows', doesn't work, and its left to the logical part to think things through, and that often, a bottle-neck happens, whereby the thought(s) never get processed by the brain.

It gets overwelmed, and therefore, the info is lost. Early days for me, I just want to make contact with like minded people now. No Bullshitters plz. I'm not sure how the site works, so its another learning curve, but I can cope with that.
I'm fairly easygoing and humerous, iq is about 127
Not that iq means anything really. If you wish to contact me, just to say hello or whatever thats fine.

What is your first name? Ilia

Age: 40

Location: Gold Coast Australia

Current perseverations: Reading, Tom Waits, work, work, graphic design, typography
When did you discover AS? About 4 years ago when my son was dx. I read the literature and all the jigsaw pieces fell into place. Only got an official diagnosis a couple of months ago though.

Do you have a degree? Ba Industrial Design

Kids? 1 son 13 yrs

Favorite music, other than NIN - Tom Waits, Tom Waits, Tom Waits....

Job? Graphic designer for company, freelance designer in my evenings and teaching in the bits in between

Relationship with significant other, past or present? Quite a few - could never get that relationship business quite worked out. Married once by mistake. I got better but....

Anything else you feel is pertinent: I'll think about it, but for now, nothing

Ok, I reckon I've been here long enough, so here goes...

What is your first name? Lee... no, actually that's my middle name, but it's what I use. ;-)

Age: 40

Location: Alabama, USA

Current perseverations: disability advocacy, sci-fi/fantasy literature and film, real-time strategy games, psychology (and why relationships never seem to work right for me, which leads to the "self-help" books), downloading free software

When did you discover AS? My son, now age 17, was diagnosed 7 years ago. My 2nd ex-wife (not his mother) brought it to my attention that it was thought to be hereditary about a year later, which then explained a LOT of things in my life that bothered me, like about people and why they do the things they do. Now I know I don't always have to understand why; I'm just different.

Do you have other psych diagnoses? Profound depression (with suicidal tendencies), passive-submissive/borderline personality (both before the AS diagnosis)

Do you have a degree? Associate Degree in Applied Electronics Technology

Kids? They're fantastic with salsa... Seriously, my son is 17 and my daughter is 15. Son has AS, daughter had in-utero stroke causing some slight learning disability.

Favorite music? Actually, I do like NIN and other industrial style music, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Pink Floyd, Eminem... but mostly I love music without lyrics. Bach is best, especially harpsicord and organ music... also retro computer music found at http://remix.kwed.org/... you can actually listen to it without downloading it here.

Job? Lead Operator ("floor supervisor") for a 411/operator services call center for the past 2 years.

Relationship with significant other, past or present? Been married twice, occasional girlfriend after 2nd marriage, currently no relationship of any kind.

Plans for the future? Can't make plans. Too frustrating when they don't work out right.

Anything else you feel is pertinent: Had hyperlexia as a child; still have hypersensitivity to odors and bright lights, which makes grocery shopping very tense. Still have gross motor coordination problems--you should see me run into the cubicle walls on a daily basis...

Anything else you feel is pertinent: No, I'm impertinent

Current perseverations: amateur naturalist, trail running, cycling, birding, wildlife video, archery, medieval period, Tolkein literature

When did you discover AS? A few years ago on an episode of "Becker"! I wondered what it was and read about it.

Do you have other psych diagnoses? no

Do you have a degree? Bachelors

Kids? no

Favorite music? Not as into music as most people! I like early classical, Celtic, bluegrass, a few other genres

Job? retired aerospace engineer, but I take on fun projects now and then

Relationship with significant other, past or present? married three decades to nt

Plans for the future? to learn the name of every animal, insect, plant, and rock in my immediate surroundings

Anything else you feel is pertinent: I was very aspie-ish as a child, blended in during my teens, 20's & 30's, survived a brain aneurysm at 40, and began becoming aspie-ish again. Now I see good qualities in it and learn to deal with the less good aspects

reading who done it and crime novels, I have collected hundreds of books on children's learning disabilities and how to help them learn, I perseverate on whatever I am talking about, like a broken record that keeps on playing and this causes me problems socially,
I discovered Aspergers by tutoring a young boy who had Aspergers, his mom thought I had it, I had so many problems that I finally went to an Autism specialist who diagnosed me
I have also been diagnosed with Bipolar II, and depression
I actually have a Bachelors, Masters and Law degree. My social problems have made it where I cannot keep a job. I have been pretty good at school, and at thebeginning, I could work ok, but now I realize that my inability to keep a job for long over many years is the result of my problems
I have an adult daughter who just had a baby
I have had great trouble with relationships, both marriage and non-marriage. Currently, I am in a relationship that sometimes goes well and sometimes does not
My plans for the future include doing some more tutoring and being a good grandmother to my grandson
