Some of my "special interests" would be more obsessive than they seem, if I had more money to indulge them.
Lifelong --
Reading -- if it has words on it, I'm going to read it. Anything from books to magazines to cereal boxes to medicine bottles
Books -- no Kindle for me. I love the look, feel, and smell of books. 95% non-fiction -- history, sciences, biographies, the arts.
Purple -- if everything I own could be purple, I would be one happy woman.
Listmaking -- I'll make lists of anything, even lists of lists!
Movies -- silent era and classic '30s and '40s Hollywood; Eastern European, Scandanavian, Russian, Japanese, B-movies and cult films.
Research -- I'm addicted to facts -- especially oddball stuff -- and am pathologically nosy. I don't believe in rhetorical questions. If a question is asked, I must find the answer.
Bags -- purses, totes, suitcases, backpacks
Maps
Past (no particular order and some were concurrent) --
Nail Polish
Earrings
Unicorns
KISS (the band, not the activity)
Astrology
B.C. collections (the comic strip)
Al Jaffe collections (comic illustrator for Mad magazine)
MTV (in its early years)
Native American decor
Celtic folklore
Holstein cow figurines
Seinfeld
MASH
FARK message board -- weird news stories
Power Surge message board - menopause boards

Creating and drafting floorplans
Horror fiction
Dystopian futures novels
Baseball (still love it, but not obsessed like I was in the '90s)
Current --
Ghost TV (Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, Paranormal State, Celebrity Ghost Stories, etc.)
Drawing -- I'm no good at it, and I don't do anything formally. Just sketching on scrap paper, edges of newspaper, etc. I'm particularly into drawing headshots.
World Religions
Green glass bottles
Wrong Planet message board
Current: Sci-Fi/Fantasy books, movies, TV, whatever. I've been that way since my oldest brother gave me a box set of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" for Christmas when I was 11.
World of Warcrack - Been addicted since 2006. Don't know what it is about that game in particular, but I keep going back. I've tried other MMORPG's but it's just not the same.
Dungeons and Dragons (Yeah, I'm that big of a geek, even at 46) I've been collecting the books and accessories since I was a freshman in High School.
Science and scientific research - no formal schooling there, but quantum physics fascinates me.
Music - specifically 80's music. I literally grew up in the 80's. I was a freshman in High School in 1980, graduated in 1984, joined the Army Reserve that same year, got married in 1987, and my (now ex) wife was pregnant in 1989.
Past:
The SCP Foundation - http://www.scp-wiki.net/
Stephen King
Dean Koontz
Newsjunkie (MSNBC and sometimes CNN, as well as The Weather Channel)
Electronic Dance Music
night club lighting
DJ
Computers
Broadcasting
Technical Theater

My lifelong special interest has been politics...started when I was less than 7 years old. It's been a complete and total obsession and I found some success working in the field for a few years. Right now, I am also spending a lot of time researching Asperger's to better understand myself.
Other past/present interests include:
* Computers/Internet (especiallly my tablet)
* Cars
* Reading
* Planning for "if I win the lottery"
Computer programming has been the interest I've had the longest. I wrote my first computer game in the early 80's at the age of 7. I work as a software engineer now.
Other interests of mine have included:
Ham radio, specifically building antennas. (callsign: K7ADB)
Building electronic things.
Motorcycle accident statistics. Yea, yea, I know. It's a weird one.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is my current obsession. It's like a fast rolling chess game. I absolutely love it. I'm not the best at it physically but I love the theory and history behind it all. If you like the strategy of chess but want something a little faster then check it out. You don't need to be athletic either.
