I have suffered too, from this exploitation. In one of my prior friendships, the woman was doing this a lot, and I couldn't see it. She invited me over for a week during summer vacation (she lived in another state) and actually invited another friend over so that they could sit and stare at me. The other lady made some comment about how pretty my skin was, and I felt really funny - like I was under a microscope.

In "Last days" by Gus van Sant there is a very good scene where Cobain-Blake is interviewed by a yellow pages salesaman. The salesman has no perception of the fact that Cobain-Blake is only thinking of his suicide. Blake-Cobain is too downtrodden not to be polite with the salesman. So the conversation appears quite surreal. In the whole movie Blake-Cobain is surrounded by people who want something from him, while he is only thinking of putting an end to his life. So they are all predators, exploiters, in a sense, while he is a victim, a prey, in the conversations that happen.

i thought i would never have a friend. then there was a friend. now she has been my friend for 25 years. she will be my friend for life. making and keeping friends is NOT a gift i have. i tend to attract weak people, people who life in dramas, people with severe needs. crazies. like me.
