I have a 1996 Honda Civic and I am obsessed with upgrading this thing into a "phantom" Type-R coupe. Phantom means it is a replica of a car that should have, but was never made from the factory. Anyways, I cannot seem to stop buying upgrade parts for my car. And worse, the parts are piling up in my storage shed... Anyone else obsessed with modifying their cars?

Yes . Fortunately I didn't have the funds. It passed quite quickly . I found the idea of chipping to boost the turbo fascinating. I calculated where I would like the boost etc. Also making suspension mods.

Later when it passed I realized I am quite happy with my car the way it is. The PSI boost would eventually damage the engine and the increased forces acting on the steering elements through better cornering would take its toll .

I will now drive the car which is nearly twenty years old until the doors drop off. I can now see no point in changing it or modifying it. I tend to spend a day and clean it every now and then , and I once bought an electric buffer to polish the paintwork. I enjoy this activity.

Do you enjoy modifying your car?

I myself am going all motor on this one. My next plans when and if I get a job are to do a rear disc brake swap and put a rear sway bar from a 1999 Civic Si on it. I spent 3 hours yesterday afternoon changing the spark plugs because it was the first day we have had in the longest time that the temperature was around 50.

I am only obsessed with cars if they are nice to drive. Or if I need to have one. But otherwise, I'm very much more obsessed with horses.

I think my car obsession takes a different tack. My spouse is a UAW retiree, so I/we get a nice discount on new vehicles. We replace our current ride every 2-3 years. The fun part for me is in spec'ing it out! Twice now, I've come up with a unique combination of specs; the salesman checked his computer & told me there was no other vehicle in the entire U.S. with my choice of options. That's fun!

Granted, constant car payments may seem ridiculous to some. But think of the total outlay: I probably spend as much on payments as some do on modifications over the space of a year. For instance, the truck I'm turning in next month has cost me over $5,000/yr in lease payments. Yeah, I know some mods can cost more than that...EACH.

I'll "pimp" my ride with nice, but inexpensive stuff like bug deflectors, bed liners & caps/deck lids, vent visors, & the occasional set of "chicken lights". But I prefer something that can visually go under the optical radar of the cops. I have a nasty case of Lead-foot-itis, so a black or gray vehicle is more likely to blend in with traffic as opposed to something flashy like red or yellow.

While I do enjoy messing around with cars, I just don't have the time to do what I would like with an old one. So I get something new that won't need constant attention & money.
