Loosing weight as an Aspie
For like the 100million'th time I realize I really really need to loose weight. I weigh 50kg's too much, so its just not for "fun". It's really a matter for my health. Me and my fianceé also want to get kids in the near future and my weight is in the way there. It's not healthy for neither me or the child with this overweight.
During my 26 year long life I've tried several different ways to reach my goal. The best success was when I was still living home and ate less fat and trained alot aswell. (schoolgymnastic and karate) All in all I lost maybe 5kg's over more then 6 months.
Unlike "most" aspies I like food too much. I dont really overeat. But I enjoy good food, and candy, potatoechips, coca cola etc etc.. I've tried to exclude it completely wich resulted in a whiny me, sulking and refused to eat anything, since it felt like it didnt matter anyway.. since I wasnt alowed to eat what I craved.
Eating what I crave doesnt work either. I want it less then if I exlude it, but its still too much. I dont loose any weight. Atleast Im not gaining right now.
More then a year ago I tried lowcarbon-highfat. I managed 3 days. At day 3 I was almost apathic.. just lying in bed, crying, refusing to talk, eat or do anything. My fianceé refused to let me continue.
Ofc back then I was highly depressed. Wich didnt help at all in all this.
Im willing to give this another go. With a first start of 2 weeks, and if I can manage that, continue for a while. Until I have lost atleast 10-15kg's. Then we can start "making babies", as my wonderful man said.
Meanwhile I train on our wii-fit and going swiming. Im not completely sure what its called in english, but you get it supscribed from the doc and go with a special group of others that have the same problem like you. I go there for my knees that hurt alot. But its rather intense, so its doing good in more places then the knees.
How are you other aspies faring with weightproblems? How do you cope with these problems?

Yes I think exercise is crucial without having that routine and quickening your metabolism it wont stay off. I highly recommend Tai Chi most community centers have a class and its alot of older and out of shape there so not so intimidating, and its also gentle and a relaxing workout. I also had immediate results from stopping eating wheat ,its not easy but I discovered a wheat allergy by elimination diet and dont miss being bloated and itchy. I lost 30lbs within weeks if nothing else it helps reduce carbs. I would also add going off of sugar /corn syrup (contains fructose another potential allergen) for TWO weeks if you can make it that far it resets your taste buds so a grape tastes like candy. Good luck, I wont add how much I used to weigh but I bet its more than you so I know these things can work.![]()
What works for me (your mileage may vary) is a low carb/ high protein diet where you get all your carbs from eating veggies and fruit low on the glycemic scale instead of potato chips, etc. I also avoid eating sugar and most bread whenever possible.
For exercise, I do pilates on a balance ball (also known as a stability or exercise ball), walk, and swim. I have a very slow metabolism due to thyroid problems, so I have to work hard when I want to lose weight.

Thanks for the input.
I will try lchf once again, but this time with a timegoal. First 2 weeks and then longer.
Just exersising and eating low fat doesnt work so well for me. I dont know why, but I dont loose enough by that. Besides.. I have to confess that Im rather tired of all the sugar. Tired of wanting it, craving it.
Our economy isnt the best this month, so my goal is to start within a few weeks. Until then I will read up about the subject, find recepies and start minimizing the sugarlevel. (atleast removing the cookies and not drinking so much coke etc.)
I just hope Im strong enough this time. So I can fight my thoughts.
You should try to work on speeding up your metabolism as that makes it easier to lose weight.
Drink green tea, coffee and try eating very small but frequent meals. For example, instead of 3 big ones try 5 small ones.
Also vegetables and fruits like broccoli or pineapples are good if you want to lose weight ![]()

I Agree on Green tea and 5 small meals though not coffee , Yerba Mate' is a great substitute it increases metabolism and add minerals instead of leaching them like coffee of course vegetables are good carbs but have your thyroid checked before you eat too many brassicas(broccoli , cabbage family) or soy these slow thyroid function.

Yeah, I had my thyroid checked 2 years ago and got to know that I had a slight lack of the production there. So I take pills for that everyday. Im allergic to soy,so thats atleast not a problem. I can eat maximum 2 teaspoons/week, more then that and I get sick. Too bad since I really like soy.. But interesting things you come with here. Didnt know they slowed the thyroid down.
LKL: Sadly enough I dont have an iphone.. its on the wishinglist though.
I'm currently losing some weight, in my last measurement I saw that I lost almost 1 kilo. And I managed to do it in the xmas holidays!
It was though and required lots of discipline!
(the next list is not complete, I'm just writing some of the stuff I'm having in my diet)
I'm currently having for breakfast:
* juice from grapefruit (natural, not from bottle) + nopal in blender. Tasty drink!
plus:
* a Cup of cereal (a high fiber one)
OR
* yoghurt
eating:
* chickenbroth
* broth
* ceviche
* meat tacos
* machaca
* etc
Dinner:
similar to breakfast
free to eat snacks:
* jicama
* jell-o
BTW I've gone to a nutritionist who's been constantly checking me for the past month and a half.
good luck!

Elrun, I've lost about 15 pounds over the last 2 years by doing four things.
1) I try not to drink any calories, this means no coke, no sweetened tea, or coffee, no fruit juices etc. This was really hard cuz I just love coca cola.
2) Exercise EVERY day, wether it's walking, hiking, or running, just get your kester off the couch.
3) No food after dinner.
4) Fruits, or veggies, instead of my favorite food, chocolate.
At age 54 I'm at the right weight for my height and have excellent, BP, and cholesterol. Good luck, it's doable, just avoid the fad diets, and take it slow.

Thanks for all replies.
In my case I think I need someone to continually go and talk to. Not a dietist though. They cant teach me any more.. tried so often. Since I do know HOW to. Its just hard to practise it. So my idea now is weightwatchers. It follows rules that I can live with, and need, wich makes it easier for me. And you go to meetings, meet others in your own situation, and have someone to ask and that boosts you.
So right now Im just hoping my fiance gets his job, so we can afford getting me there.

^ Eirun, honestly, try drinking the grapefruit+nopal juice, it's great and wll do wonders for you. Nopal is rich in fiber, rich in vitamins and rich in minerals
Nopales are very rich in insoluble and especially soluble dietary fiber. They are also rich in vitamins (especially vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K, but also riboflavin and vitamin B6) and minerals (especially magnesium, potassium, and manganese, but also iron and copper). Nopales have a high calcium content, but the nutrient is not biologically available because it is present as calcium oxalate, which is neither highly soluble nor easily absorbed through the intestinal wall.[3] Addition of nopales also reduces the glycemic effect of a mixed meal.[4] Nopales are low carbohydrate and may help in the treatment of diabetes.[5]
