I am curious who else is on the spectrum and has a child (or children). How old are your kids? Are they on the spectrum, too?

My daughter is 1. It is too soon to know if she is neurotypical, but she is already better at eye contact and joint attention than I am.

Are there any good books for parents like us? My library has books for NT parents with autistic children, but I saw nothing for parents who are non-NT.

Hi! I'm a mom with identical twin adult daughters with Asperger's. I believe I also have Asperger's, almost certainly. Being an Aspie or near-Aspie myself, I was able to at least understand my girls quirks, needs, sensory issues, etc. It seemed to really help them to know that someone close to them really "got" them when no one else seemed to, even their dad.
A couple of books not specifically autism/Aspergers related that kind of helped me, and therefore helped me with my girls:
The Highly Sensitive Person and The Difficult Child.

Good luck :-)

I'm pretty sure I'm an Aspie, but don't have the money for diagnosis (only kids get diagnosed for free here). My 10 yr old has an Aspergers diagnosis, and the 4 yr old has an ASD, not really specific about him yet. We're waiting to see if his speech improves, but his key worker think he'll be high functioning eventually. Like Savetigers, I seem to get where they're coming from when others don't.

Highly sensitive seems like a good way to think about it! I will look into that book, thank you.

I have AS and have three children. I have a 7 year old daughter who is NT, a 3 year old son with classic autism, and a 1 year old daughter who is NT.

I have a daughter, who is three. I don't know whether she's AS or NT yet.

My 19 y/old daughter has Schizoaffective disorder & my 17 y/old son has Schizophrenia. Otherwise I think they're considered NT.

edited to add: I was diagnosed at the age of 43....if my dx had occured BEFORE I had kids, I believe I would have chosen NOT to have children (but obviously THAT is a wag [wild @$$ed guess])

my children are grown- I have 3 and none are asps- but one of my grandaughters seems to share a lot of my 'quirks' - for instance she's extremely sensitive to how clothes fit... no tags or metal snaps ect... I dont see her often and so have just recently noticed how alike we are. it amazes me... certain things I had always considered to be nothing more than personal preferences- are actually genetic. i see this picture of my DNA in which there is a miniscule dot, passed down generations, pertaining solely to our reactions when shoelaces are tied too tight

I am suspected Aspie (Ok, I'll just go ahead and say it - I AM AN ASPIE.. LOL)

I have 3 children:
A son, 19, diagnosed at various ages with PDD/NOS, classic autism, and Asperger's
A son, 17, NT but with slight OCD tendencies
A daughter, 15, ADHD, but I suspect possible mild Aspie too.

My boys are 7 and 10. I don't know if they are on the spectrum, as sadly I haven't seen them in 5 years. Up until the age of 5 I witnessed some behaviours from the eldest, which might suggest autism, but it could have just been him being a little kid. I got an aspergers diagonosis this year, so am not sure if I should inform their mother, or see if I can get contact with them in the future and divulge my diagnosis if it seems pertinant to the children's development. I hope they are NT, so things aren't more complicated for them.

My son has ASD, daughter is probably borderline, but more NT than me. I have just been diagnosed with high Aspergers traits

My 3yo daughter has some traits that I recognize but I'm unsure she would qualify for a diagnosis at this point. For now I'm just waiting to see how she'll do in school. I figure that me knowing that this may be the case will already make part of the difference. If it seems like she'll need more (outside) help we can always move forward with evaluations etc.
I am about to be diagnosed (at 31) - really this time. I still have to figure out what good that will do, what help is available etc, so I get to be the guinea pig...

Ex-husband is NT and not knowing about our differences was, in hindsight, part of why it didn't work out. We're on good terms and she goes there for one or two nights every week.

I was dx'ed last year. I have a girl aged 9 and a boy aged 6. I believe they are both NT. They were both somewhat slow in starting to talk. The girl has a good memory and attention to detail, but is very sociable. The boy is obsessed with video games, sensitive to loud noises and to losing (be it a card game or a ball game) and a very picky eater, so I am more suspicious about him, but he is still reasonably sociable.

What is "reasonably sociable"?

My parents/family thought I was "very sociable" with my adult relatives (and at least whatever other kids who HAD to play with me) but those kids probably wouldn't CHOOSE to play with me if they weren't expected to. The "normal" kids at school didn't want to play with me. I wound up befriending random other oddballs who also couldn't make friends but I couldn't even keep those friendships for very long before I said or did something unintentionally to alienate/upset/piss them off.
