Pretty sure my husband is very high functioning Asperger's or Asperger-like traits. In a nutshell, he is a good person and I love him, but we seem to have difficulty connecting on an emotional/psychological level (feeling close, romance, transitioning from one level of intimacy to another) and other related issues. I am hoping since we live in a large metropolitan area there will be some decent therapists available for Adult Aspies.

Thank you

I can't help thinking that your husband is into rocketry!

Seriously.....I've had girlfriends who thought that "something was missing." Perhaps, that something was "true empathy?"

I believe I only possessed cognitive entity until I reached my forties. Then, I experienced things which affected people close to me; hence, I was forced to use my cognition to empathize. This lead to actual empathy--because now I knew what the other person was feeling!

Two things:

-- Check out The Journal of Best Practices by David Finch
His wife figured out he has asperger's and got him to figure it out too by reading him a list of symptoms, but not telling him what the list was about first. It was done in a certain way that was very empowering for him and sensitive to him, and not threatening. That could give you some ideas about discussing it with him.

Second, here are some ways to find therapists in the DC area. I'm a new member and this is my first post, so I'm not allowed to post URLs, therefore I had to write the URLs funny (thank you, moderators):

Olney Counseling Center
--> www [dot] olneycounseling [dot] com
The Stixrud Group
--> www [dot] stixrud [dot] com may evaluate adults, but it might be more expensive
Psychology Today's Find a Therapist function
--> therapists [dot] psychologytoday [dot] com/rms/prof_search [dot] php
Put in your ZIP code, then filter the results in the left sidebar by Asperger's, so you might be able to find someone that way.
