I studied the philosophy of mathematics, which was one of my favourite fields ever. I actually believed in Platonism before I read Plato, so we think much the same.
Yes I studied and taught Literature, primarily the Victorians but also Theory and Criticism. You might enjoy Mary Shelley if you're into 19th c British science. I agree with you that many innovations have shaped the world today.
Phrenology, maybe not so much.
I've never read Tolkien but Lewis' life would make a good read. I should have mentioned that I love literary biographies and I'm a shameless bibliophile with far more books than shelves.
You weren't smattering at all. I'm the one who can scarcely hold a train of thought right now.
I hope things are going a little better today.

Think , i can relate to your wonderful neighbourhood scenario .( dibocle) .. It can be a drag living in some places and circumstances ..... ...... .....
And having once had a interest(special).in how images could be transmitted over the airwaves via radio frequencies,
At the time ...it was much more common to send signals over co-axial cables ( wires). And much playing around later
figured to connect these to a vid recorder ..No thought towards security uses at the time. But it was fun to watch things from a distance, when you not actually having to stand there. Now move forward,40 years . And wireless video transmission is common as dirt . So a short search on big onine distributor will give you many brands of all kinds of stuff, even wireless baby monitors . But a Security camera installed or tucked into a small corner up near the ceiling of a porch.
And they tie in through your wifi for your internet connection.Through a App that the company manufacting the cameras
usually work pretty well .. A good working company brand of V i m t a g is pretty freindly intro system. or others on
your local common big store online bulk selling company. They are usually user freindly , just try to avoid having your camera / cameras looking into the sun, at all times of the day. if you can help it. You can plug in a pair your camera ,inside your home . Just pay attn to how far away your cameras is from your wifi modem. And then follow simple instructions from the manual . Do a search for reveiws on whatever brand of camera you choose . Some actually have a onboard mini memory card .To save images Snd some for a 3-4 dollar fee/ per month To use the companys cloud server storage. In addition to the onboard storage on the camera itself..90% of these type of cameras only require a
plugin outlet for their 5 volt wallwort to plug into. For extra money you can get small solar panel and battery that is offered as option for their cameras....Since you can pair the camera before installing it, it is easier to install.
Plus you might have evidence of any harassment you get. But this is a project to have fun with "enjoy" . Some of these cameras have no problem looking through windows. To see outside .If outdoor install , might do it at night. A camera will make it easier to take the high ground, incase, police need to be addressed . And
Some some of these are as cheap as ""27.00"" dollars per camera .
Had / have a bad neighbour. , That my 2 cameras incidentally watch their house from 2 different angles as part of the cameras actually looking at my own yard. Just incidentally happens to see areas beyond the cameras . ( only record publically veiwable areas) . Probably best never to mention your camera, unless proof for police.
Or get a Lawyer and get your money back from your landlord , and use to move away.
If you have the app fownloaded and paired to your phone, etc. devise. You can yse your phone to chevk your angle of the lense of these little cameras. Some are as emall as a 2x2 cube or rectangle shape.

the Irish have an expression, "trust everybody but cut the cards." IOW trust NOBODY EVER. especially neighbors. if they show larcenous psychopathic behavior, if you are stuck there and can't move away from the bastards, WATCH THEM with a security camera system such as Simplisafe. they are fairly pricey, a basic system costs about $500 but they are easy to install and provide 24/7 coverage, and if your neighbors invade your property while you are gone the system notifies your cell phone. if there is a break-in the police are automatically notified if you pay $30/month for their monitoring service. be sure to register the system with your local constabulary, to make sure they are on the same page as you. the local cops basically need your permission to go on your property if they receive the alarm call from Simplisafe.
Fingers crossed for you buddy.
Thanks very much
After I sent my message I started thinking a bit philosophically, and decided that humiliation is not really the worst of things. Worse is a fear for my physical safety. And also, to be honest, a bit of a fear of social ostracism, that I imagine possibly comes from some deep and primal place when one feels alone and socially disconnected. It's also not pleasant to be made fun of, but I don't think that provokes quite the same level of anxiety.
I know I am a bit strange by common standards. It's funny that IsabellaLinton mentioned Shelley, because I was actually imagining a crowd wielding torches and pitchforks beating down my door like in the scene from Frankenstein. The mind goes interesting places sometimes...
---
Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions. I will reply more as soon as I get the chance. But, IsabellaLinton, that is very interesting that you've studied the philosophy of mathematics, and that you studied and taught literature. And Jakki and auntblabby I was starting to think about pricing a professional security system, at least one with a couple cameras. I might follow through on that now. And auntblabby I really enjoy that quote; I'm too naively trusting sometimes. And Jakki I was wondering about the process of working with a lawyer to break a lease. I'll look some more into that too.
Lease....A home is suppose to be expected to be able to live peacefully , I would think .
The camera systems are easy as setting up any bluetooth devise, but in addition to one of their cheapy but solid little cameras might have to buy a tiny memory card aswell. practically plug and play, and can be easily removed or moved
If you do a camera always mount it just alittle too high to reach. Just a FYI ,, might not wait until the opportunity has ""passed" for evidence of your environment. That you are dealing with. .

Loves velcro,
Thanks Jakki, I'm going to look at cameras first thing in the morning. And it's very cool that you were able to hook up a wireless video system. Electronics were one of my first special interests, that I'm starting to get back into lately There's a place nearby that sells security systems and cameras.

Thanks I am feeling slightly better about things at the moment anyways. Maybe I'm finally adjusting to the situation some.
When I mentioned the scene from Frankenstein, I bet that's only in the movie and not the book. Sorry for being so lame My taste in culture is really about an even mix of the "low brow" and the "high brow"
Very good point. All the ideas of that time definitely weren't winners
I love biographies in general, though I think I've only read a couple about authors. But I am most definitely also a shameless bibliophile and have many plastic totes fully of books that don't fit on my shelves. We really are kindred spirits I think
They just heard me talking on the phone for a few minutes, inside my house, and that was enough to cause them to come out and start having a mini-meltdown. (Or maybe I'm wrong and the timing is just a coincidence.) I wish I had the cameras up now.
Wait, you mentioned Frankenstein?
I must have missed that comment.
I've never seen the movie so we're opposites there!
Here's a good movie recommendation if you don't mind me spamming your thread!

I'm glad you're feeling a little better and I'm piqued about your book bins!

I said I feel like people will come after me for being strange sometimes. Joking... halfway But that reminded me of Frankenstein.
I honestly don't think I've seen the movie either, or at least not all of it. I think I've just seen that scene with the villagers storming the castle with torches and pitchforks used in a meme-like manner. But I haven't read the book.
But thank you for the recommendation! And I would not mind anyone spamming any of my threads. Well, I guess I might if they literally spammed it, with advertisements or something. Wait, are you being paid by IFC? I don't watch many movies these days, but if I do watch one, I think this is the sort of thing I would like to watch.
I actually tried quite a few different bins before I found the ones that seem to work the best. Here is an Amazon link to the ones I've stuck with:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CQ ... =UTF8&th=1
The problem with many of them is that they have little feet, so when full of books the middle sags down, which causes the books to scrunch up a little bit on one side, so over time they become warped. (We are a little OCD ) But these Iris bins work very well and support and protect the books nicely. They're about the right size to hold a good amount of books, while still being lift-able.
I also have an app that you might like It is called CLZ books, and it's for book collectors. You can scan the barcode of most books, and it will look them up in the database created by other collectors, with all the bibliographic details and cover art, and so on. If a book hasn't been added yet you can add the details yourself. And if the barcode doesn't work you can search by author, title, isbn, etc. And if you pay a small amount you can sync your collection info to the cloud. It is really wonderfully done, honestly. I have all my paper books catalogued in there -- in fact it says I have 763 of them. Which is honestly far too many, but I can't get rid of any. I'm currently sitting on my couch, and there are four piles of books on the couch around me
Another of my quirks is that I write a lot. I don't write stories or anything, more just many lists and personal essays about my current thoughts. I did start writing a story a few years ago, but it was very hard work! I very much admire the work of authors.
Well thanks again everyone for helping me through this difficult time. Talking to you all on here has been so very helpful I think I will be able to make things work until the end of my lease. Then who knows what's next.
I'm sorry if I've offended you IsabellaLinton. You seem to be extremely knowledgeable, and thanks for sharing a bit with me about literature.
Offended me?
Not at all! Sorry but I don't request notifications so I often go quite a while before I notice there's a comment for me. The book bins look really nice for a variety of things including hanging files. I could use something like that if I had a place to put them but my floor space is already really limited by lots of pet merch lol. I do have a nice wooden filing cabinet though. They look like a great idea for storing books even if there's a little bit of sag.
The thing about people storming the castle makes me picture Wizard of Oz. Now I have that song in my head and I'm thinking of the scene "I'm melting!" -- Yeah, my mind makes rapid fire connections just like yours, I'm sure.
CLZ sounds very cool. I like the concept. I think someone mentioned that to me before but I forgot what it was called. There's a book I've been searching for for decades although I can't remember the name or author, just the name of a character. I've tried several databases and keep coming up cold. Maybe I'll take a look there when my life calms down a bit in future. A few months ago I went on a photography spree and posted gazillions of pictures of my books for Duckhairback but I don't remember what thread it was. If I had time to photograph books I'm sure I could manage the barcodes. (Dreams briefly of earning an MLS and starting over ... )
I write as well. I wrote a semi-autobiographical fiction about two years ago, kind of like Virginia Woolf meets Sylvia Plath in style. I dabble in poetry, maintain a blog, and wrote some academic reviews as recently as a couple of years ago. I wish we had blog spaces on here but if you're into writing you could always start your own thread and treat it like a blog? Perhaps that would be one more way to keep yourself busy at times when your neighbours are driving you mad.
I'm glad you're feeling a little more settled now!

Deleted my earlier post because in hindsight it sounded whiny.
I definitely don't mind people taking their time in replying. I have the tendency to worry about whether I've been a jerk. I just don't think the world needs more jerks; there are surely plenty enough of them.
I think those bins are made for hanging files, but they're also the best I've found for storing books. I don't have much furniture at the moment, but my book boxes line the base of a couple walls. If I ever settle down in one place for a while I'd like to get some shelves and file cabinets. Is an MLS a... Masters in Library Science?
CLZ is really nice. It's gotten better recently too; now almost every book I scan is already in the database. I like having a list of the books in my collection. Though I didn't actually mean to collect so many, and in some ways wish that I didn't.
I have always enjoyed The Wizard of Oz. I like that the story is about people who thought they had some serious flaw, which in the end turned out to be their strength. I can relate to that. I suppose my mind does make rapid fire connections sometimes. Occasionally they're even useful
That is very cool that you've taken on those writing projects. Especially the novel None of my writing is really public. It's more just something I enjoy doing. But it might be interesting to make it public, even if anonymous at first. I actually went through grad school and almost started an academic career, but in the end I decided that academia is too social these days to be a good fit for me. I might have fit in as the classic, stereotypical eccentric professor, but I don't think that type could get tenure nowadays. During grad school I also spent a lot of time studying things that personally interested me, instead of what is currently hot in the research field, and I don't think that leads to research success. Though I did graduate in good standing. So I guess in fact I'm Dr. microprogrammer , but never once have I asked someone to refer to me that way, nor would I ever. I think spending those years developing skill in one topic have served me well in the things I've done since, and that's all that matters to me. I went to grad school in my 30s as a sort of bucket list project to pursue a special interest.
I am continuing to ignore those crazy yahoos across the way, and I think they're starting to get the picture. I'm sure I'm learning a valuable skill in dealing with certain people too.

In the earlier post I mentioned that I may legitimately have OCD. And for several years had a superstitious obsession, despite being quite scientifically minded. Just mentioning it here so my current messages have the same content as the one I deleted, just with a better tone. I speculated that my OCD tendencies could play a role in worrying if I've offended someone sometimes.
I was also thinking about the place I'm living, and it hit me that this neighborhood seems in a place where it could go either way, towards becoming a safer neighborhood or a more unsafe neighborhood. It seems like in recent years it has been moving towards the latter. But I think some people living here are making an effort to turn that around, by keeping their yards and homes in good condition, keeping some windows with open curtains, and other things like that. In this area where I'm living, the vibe of a neighborhood can really change within a matter of just a couple blocks. In the small city where I grew up that wasn't really the case. There the "safe" and "unsafe" neighborhoods -- maybe in terms of objective measures of crime -- were separated by things like rivers or larger roads. I guess that's also something that varies from one place to the next. I remember having a sociology professor back in my first few semesters of college classes who thought that having things more mixed up in this way is actually a good thing. I suppose I can see his point if it makes things overall safer and more equitable.
